Tuesday, October 29 th, 2013 Today’s Agenda: 1.Get out the Unit 3 pre-test to be collected. 2.Work on your warm-ups. 3.Get out a sheet of paper and at the top, label it Pythagorean Theorem

Pythagorean Theorem Learning Target: Students will discover the meaning behind the Pythagorean Theorem through a PowerPoint as a whole group and then with a hands on activity in groups.

Pythagoras was born on the Aegean island of Samos. He is best known for the Pythagorean Theorem, which relates the side lengths of a right triangle. a 2 + b 2 = c 2

Pythagorean Theorem: IN WORDS… In any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the two legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse.

Pythagorean Theorem: ALGEBRA… a b c

a b c Hypotenuse -opposite the right angle -the longest side Legs -adjacent to the right angle

Pythagorean Theorem: NUMBERS… 6 8 10 a = 6 b = 8 c = 10 a 2 + b 2 = c 2 6 2 + 8 2 = 10 2 36 + 64 = 100 100 = 100 TRUE STATEMENT

8 c 15 a 2 + b 2 = c 2 ____ + ____ = c 2 ____ = c 2 c = ____ WT pg. 137 #3

12 20 b WT pg. 138 #4 a 2 + b 2 = c 2 ___ + b 2 = ___ -___- ___ b 2 = ___ b = ___

a 26 24 WT pg. 138 #5 a 2 + b 2 = c 2 a 2 + ___ = ___ - ___- ___ a 2 = ___ a = ___

5 12 c What is the length of the missing side?

A "Pythagorean Triple" is a set of positive integers, a, b and c that fits the rule: integers a 2 + b 2 = c 2

4 5 c What is the length of the missing side?

5 7 c

25 a 7 Solve for the unknown side in the right triangle to the nearest tenth.

12 4 b Solve for the unknown side in the right triangle to the nearest tenth.

Have you got it? 1. Find the height h of the triangle. 2. Find the length of side c to the nearest meter. 8 m 12 m h c 10 m 6 m9 m Use the figure for Problems 1 and 2.
