3 Invitation Who: Students of FASE Transition 2/3 What: First Ever “Math is Everywhere” Fair When: Monday, April 13, 2015 Where: Faith Academy Room - 203 Why: Students demonstrate that any and everything that we enjoy involves math

4 Project Details Choose a topic they are passionate about Ex. Cooking, Sports, Music, Pets, Swimming, Dancing, etc. Find at least 3-5 ways that math is used in this topic Time, Money, Measurement – conversions, fractions, graphs, etc. Create a visual presentation: Use a trifold board (like in the Science Fair) Not many rules – just show your 3 – 5 math examples, title (Math is Everywhere) and your topic And present for 2-5 minutes Part 1: Why did you choose this topic? Part 2: Math is everywhere Part 3: You have at least 3 questions for class plus one question you think the class may ask - and class has opportunity to ask you questions

5 More Details Project Displays are due Monday, April 13, 2015 See Blog Time Line for entry due dates This project will count as both a math and writing grade Students will have four school weeks to complete this project at home. Please let your child take ownership of the project, and we ask that you please provide little help for your student at home.

6 Blog Entries There will be several required blog entries for this project. Students will go to Math is Everywhere link on Teacherweb then click on “Kidblog” to complete the blog entries. We will test the blog before the project begins to ensure everyone has access at home.

7 Blog Time Line Due date: by 9 p.m. on :Blog Topic Monday, March 9Practice to ensure access (completed) Wednesday, March 11Practice posting comments (completed) Monday, March 16Part 1: Topic and Reasoning Wednesday, March 18Post feedback for TWO classmates There can be no more than two comments per post. Monday, March 30Part 2: Blog Directions (Specific math Examples) 3 for 2 nd grade and 5 for 3 rd grade Thursday, April 2Part 2: Blog Directions - Comments on specific math examples. Use the “sandwich comment” to provide feedback Comment on TWO (2 nd grade) or THREE (3 rd grade) classmates’ post. There can be no more than ONE comment per topic. Monday, April 6Part 3: Three questions you will ask the class after your oral presentation. One question they might ask after the presentation. Do not post answers. No comments are necessary. Monday, April 13Oral presentation and Display board due.

8 Rubric Student Name __________ Suggested Topic: _________ Points MathProject includes 3 or 5 different ways math connects to the chosen topic. 10 ResearchAccurate and current information is gained from reliable sources (at least 3 different sources) 5 Personal ReflectionStudents personally reflect on their project by completing 3 or 5 blog entries about topic. 20 Critique of other’s work Students critique 2 or 3 of their classmates’ progress by offering feedback and suggestions. 20 Visual PresentationStudents display the information researched in a well organized, neat visual presentation. The presentation shows how math is used in the topic and cites the resources used to gather the information. Board labeled on the back - Name, Grade, date, and MIE. 25 Oral PresentationStudent presents for 2-5 minutes, makes eye contact with audience, can be understood clearly, presents accurate information. 15 RubricStudent provides rubric on the presentation day.
