1 CNT Enhanced Polymers James Mejia MEEN 3344

2 What is a Carbon Nanotube?
It is a hollow, cylindrical carbon molecule About a nanometer in diameter Are grown as Multi-walled, Single-walled, Double-walled and Fibers

3 How is it used? CNT must first be functionalized to be used a fillers
This can done through chemical exfoliation and dispersion (ex: Zyvex’s Kentera ),also sonication It is then dispersed into the host polymer, such as Polyurethane, Teflon, paint, etc. Untreated multi-wall nanotubes vs. Zyvex functionalized nanotubes

4 “Bridge” Additive

5 Enhancement Properties
Very high tensile strength High thermal conductivity High aspect ratio: lower wt% loading needed for enhancement Improved elasticity High electrical conductivity

6 Mechanical Properties

7 Host Polymers and Applications
Polyurethane Teflon Silicones Epoxies Polyesters Nylon PVC PMMA Acrylates Sporting Goods Automotive Aerospace Military Body Armor Electronics Semi-Conductors Biomedical Paint
