5. How a Serial Port works: modem. Serial cable w/ 9-pin on one end and 25 pin on the other. Connections: –male (w/ pins) –female (w/o pins). 25-pin: many pins are unused. 9-pin: all pins are used. On the back of the PC, the larger serial ports are 25-pin MALE.

6. How a Serial Port works: modem. Pins 1/8: line detect. Pins 5/7: ground. Pins 6/6: DSR signal. You can daisy-chain from one USB peripheral to the next, to the next, …, or use hubs to connect them together. A single USB port can have 127 devices!
