Task 2 Create Your Competition Entry Guidance Notes

TASK 2 Task 2A: To create your final product you will need to: 1.Source your images 2.Choose software 3.Set image size and resolution with consideration for pixel dimensions and dpi 4.Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s). Explain the choice of software used to meet the requirements of the competition entry and your choice of image size and/or resolution. Task 2B: Evaluate your competition entry and highlight the merits and drawbacks of your images.

1) Source Your Images Do you use any pictures – Taken by you? – Downloaded from internet? – Scanned from a magazine/ leaflet? PictureSource I downloaded this image from a free photo site. http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/agree- terms.php, so that I have permission to edit and use this image in my advert. Task 2A

2) Choose software Describe the reasons for selecting Photoshop as the software to edit and design your advert – Simple to use – Easy to learn – Can easily apply various effects – Speed up the editing process – A variety of tools for easy editing Elaborate your answer based on the above factors Task 2A

Digital images consist of small colored squares called pixels. Each pixel is filled with a solid color. Many of these small color squares placed next to one another to form an image. 3) Image size and resolution - pixel dimensions and dpi

Task 2A Pixel dimensions: M easures the total number of pixels along width and height of an image. The more pixels were used, the more detail the image contains and the larger the overall file size. Large images look sharper and more detailed. 1000 pixels 657 pixels

3) Image size and resolution - pixel dimensions and dpi Task 2A Customer requirement is A4 size printed advert. Open a new file in Photoshop. Select the size of the advert Pixel dimension

3) Image size and resolution - pixel dimensions and dpi Task 2A Resolution Resolution is the fineness of detail in a bitmap image and is measured in pixels per inch (ppi). The more pixels per inch, the greater the resolution. Generally, an image with a higher resolution produces a better printed image quality. 72 ‑ ppi 300 ‑ ppi

3) Image size and resolution - pixel dimensions and dpi Task 2A Go to Image -> Image size : Check the resolution

3) Image size and resolution - pixel dimensions and dpi Task 2A Image Size: The file size of an image is the digital size of the image file. Measured in kilobytes (K), megabytes (MB), or gigabytes (GB). Factors that affects File size 1.Pixel dimensions of the image: More pixels -> more detail at a given printed size ->Require more disk space to store -> slow to edit and print. 2.File format : GIF, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF file formats, file sizes can vary considerably for the same pixel dimensions. 3.Color bit-depth and the number of layers in an image affect file size.

4) Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s) Task 2A For more help visit : http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/tools.htmlhttp://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/tools.html

4) Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s) Task 2A Brightness/ Contrast: Adjust Brightness/ Contrast to enhance the quality of the image 1 2

4) Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s) Task 2A Colour Adjustments: Sometimes in post production you will want to change the colors of an object in your photos. 1 2. Adjust values 3

4) Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s) Task 2A Blur: Apply blur effect to a layer 1. Select Filter-> Blur -> Gaussian Blur 1. Adjust Blur level

4) Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s) Task 2A Erase the background: Use the background eraser tool. Change the tolerance level. 1. Select Background Eraser tool 2. Adjust the Tolerance level 3. Sample the foreground colour to erase

Fading one image to another 4.Gradient Tool 2. Add a Gradient on the Layer Mask using the gradient tool 5. Apply the Gradient by pointing your mouse from right to left (in this picture) 3. Add a Layer Mask 1. Paste two images 4) Use tools and techniques to edit and enhance image(s) Task 2A

Evaluate your competition entry and highlight the merits and drawbacks of your images. Evaluate your competition entry Task 2B
