3 Some Facts Different drinks contain different amounts of alcohol. One standard drink contains 10g of pure alcohol Examples of one standard drink  Low alcohol beer : 1 can – 375 ml  Regular beer : 285 ml  Wine : 100ml  Spirits : 30ml  1 regular beer = 1.4 standard drinks  1 bottle of wine (750 ml) = just over 7 standard drinks  1 bottle of spirits = 22 standard drinks Ref : Student Worksheet Changes and Choices Sheet pg 110 & 111

4 Calculating BAC  Legal Limit in Australia if you are driving a car or motorbike is 0.05  If on P or L plates you must not have any alcohol in your system Standards Men : no more than 2 standard drinks an hour then 1 standard drink after that Women : no more than 1 standard drink in the first hour and no more than 1 every hour after that Ref : Worksheet ; Standard drinks

5 GUIDELINES FOR LOW RISK DRINKING National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia’s guidelines based on standard drinks 1. All drinkers should have two days, alcohol free 2. Women should have no more than 20g of alcohol, 2 standard drinks per day and Men 40g of alcohol, 4 standard drinks Ref : Worksheet ; Standard drinks

6 Blood Alcohol Concentration  0.05 means that 0.05g of alcohol per 100g in their blood  Some factors influencing levels ◦ size of person ◦ Level of body fat ◦ How quickly they have been drinking ◦ Whether they have eating ◦ Women, having more fatty tissue and less water so alcohol is more concentrated resulting in higher BAC Ref : Worksheet ; Standard drinks
