2 Food & Nutrition Industry There are 4 main career areas in the food & nutrition industry: Food service Product development Healthcare & Nutrition Agriculture

3 Food Service The restaurant industry employs workers in restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, cruise ships and vacation resorts. Jobs include: head chefs, sous-chefs, line cooks (grill workers), prep cooks, food service managers/restaurant owners, pastry chefs, caterers, food inspector, meeting/convention planner. Education skills: culinary schools, apprenticeship, basic business & math, budgeting, ordering, menu planning.

4 Product Development Developers of new foods and food production processes require problem solving skills and ingenuity if they are to be successful. Jobs include: food scientists, research chefs, manufacturing managers, process developers, marketing staff, packaging developers, quality assurance managers, production managers, auditor. Education skills: culinary arts, food science/chemistry, math, engineering, microbiology, chemical engineering.

5 Healthcare & Nutrition Nutrition careers in the healthcare field require a solid knowledge of both science and nutrition. Jobs include: dietician (clinical, community, consultant), nutritionist, health educators, dietetic technicians, natural health therapists, naturopaths, pharmacists/pharmaceutical representatives. Education skills: Bachelor of Science (math & science courses), professional certifications.

6 Agriculture Agriculture is the very beginning of food production. This is what creates our food and gets it to market. These careers also require coursework in science and math. Jobs include: farmer, rancher, farm inspector, veterinarians, soil scientists, agricultural managers, horticulturist, aquaculture technician, urban farmer. Education skills: Bachelor of Agricultural Science, high school biology & math courses, hands-on gardening & husbandry skills (4-H).

7 Where to work? People in the food industry can work in a variety of locations such as: schools, hospitals & other public health clinics, prisons, private food service companies, weight loss institutions, pharmaceutical companies, greenhouse, plant nursery, aquaculture farm, private & corporate farms, etc. There are also a variety of jobs at the governmental level in health & safety of foods: Health Canada Canadian Food Inspection Agency
