2 Lessons of Indian Literature Indian literature had two great Hindu epics: – Mahabharata – Ramayana Both illustrated the teachings of Hinduism: – Dharma – Karma – Reincarnation

3 Buddhism : The Search For Spiritual Peace Buddhism found by Siddhartha Gautama – Young prince searched for spiritual peace. The word Buddha means “Enlightened One”. Siddhartha received by his followers Buddha practiced yoga, a spiritual practice – Combines meditation, breathing practices, specific postures, and nonviolent behavior. Buddhism rejects the social stratification of the Hindu caste system.

4 Islam in India Brought to western India by Arab traders – In the eighth century A.D First Muslim Kingdom in India was established in Delhi. Muslim expansion continued in India for centuries Muslim conquests eventually led to the establishment of the Mughal.

5 Chinese Literature Longest living civilization Existed nearly 4,000 yrs. Created an alphabet of more than 3,000 characters Started a literary tradition that continues today.

6 Chinese History: Dynastic Rule Shang dynasty 1766B.C.-1122B.C -first system of writing developed

7 Chou Dynasty Longest- lasting dynasty in Chinese history Overthrew the Shang Established a structure of imperial rule Used until early twentieth century

8 Ch’in Dynasty Overpowered the Chou The name China believed to derive from Ch’in Built roads and constructed a Great Wall Fifteen-hundred-miles across northern border

9 Han, T’ang and Sung Dynasty Literature, the arts technology, and trade flourished Eventually ended up corrupted and fighting
