9 Intelligence Quotient (IQ)  The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test as we know it today has been used to measure or predict many things including academic and job performance  Testing was used in the past for many things – including restricting immigration and defending segregation – but also for helping lower-class students get into good schools and diagnosing learning problems  Based on the premise that intelligence is genetic

15 IQ Controversies  IQ tests have been accused of being culturally biased. Less of a concern today as most test reviewers are sensitive to these concerns  Unclear if they measure innate ability or acquired knowledge  Studies in the 1980s and 1990s showed that there is less than a 25% correlation between IQ and career success  At best IQ scores may measure an aspect of intelligence  Best to remember what these tests can measure and what they can not

16 Multiple Intelligences In 1983 Howard Gardner proposed 8 types of intelligence rather than just IQ.

19 Emotional Intelligence (EI) Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to a person’s abilities to perceive, identify, understand and successfully manage emotions in self and others. Being “emotionally intelligent” means being able to effectively manage ourselves and our relationships.

26 Why EQ Matters  Academic intellect isn’t enough…although academia is important  Technical proficiency doesn’t win the prize...although skills are essential  Self-management (control) and effective interpersonal relationships make the difference between success and failure.  Managers/leaders have a profound impact on the organization and group that they lead.

28 How Can You Improve Your EQ?  Take responsibility for your life. Assume ownership for situations and the condition of your own like (internal locus of control)  Take a course in public speaking. It will help you practice self-management (controlling nervousness and self- consciousness)  Meditation/quiet time/prayer can help you relax and learn to manage your emotions.

33 Hospitality Intelligence  Hospitality Intelligence builds on the ideas of Emotional Intelligence and is a subset of skills that are specific to the hospitality industry.  What do expect out of a Hospitality Experience?

35 Hospitality Intelligence “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” The Golden Rule, Isadore Sharp - Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts  The hospitality industry is very competitive and the difference is always the same: SERVICE  In the beginning, Isadore Sharp became an evangelist, preaching the gospel of service every hour of every day on every trip to every hotel, continuously restating it, clarifying it, developing it.  Sharp told his managers:  “Your success depends on the success of your employees. So your #1 priority can’t be what you as managers want. Your priority has to be, as far as possible, an environment and a structure that gives your employees what they want.”  “Your role, then, will be a leader, not a boss. Your job will be to bring out the best in all individuals and weld them into a winning team.”

37 Meyer’s 5 Core Emotional Skills 1. Optimistic Warmth – genuine kindness, thoughtfulness, and a sense that the glass is always at least half full. 2. Intelligence – not just “smarts” but rather an insatiable curiosity to learn for the sake of learning. 3. Work Ethic – a natural tendency to do something as well as it can possible done. 4. Empathy – an awareness of, care for, and connection to how others feel and how your actions make others feel. 5. Self-awareness and Integrity – an understanding of what makes you tick and a natural inclination to be accountable for doing the right thing with honesty and superb judgment.

44 Servant Leadership 44 Servant leadership is leadership upside-down.

45 Servant Leadership 45 The concept was originally published by Robert K. Greenleaf (1970) in his essay The Servant as Leader. A person sees her or himself as servant-first, and through serving others and focusing on the needs of the group or organization is then transformed into a leader. Servant-leadership consists of an increase in one's service to the community, a holistic development of self, and the transformation of society.
