2 Odessa’s Culture TEXT. The Ukrainian culture is highly influenced by Jewish customs and traditions.. Ukrainian dances are generally fast.. During festivals women wear knitted skirts, white blouses.. Men wear white pants with designs.. Ukraine’s traditional dance was Gopak.

3 Religion. In my mother’s family religious Jewish Holidays were observed.. Elderly family members went to the Synagogue.. Main Jewish traditions in my mothers family are followed.. My mother’s grandparents read the Torah.

4 Jewish Food. During the Holiday season my mom ate Jewish food.. Latke is eaten during Hanukah.. It is eaten to remind Jewish people about the miracle of oil..Gefilte fish is also eaten.

5 Ukrainian Food.Borsch is the typical Ukrainian dish..Includes sour cream, vegetables..Bread and side dishes are served with borsch..Cheese perogies are served as well.

6 Ukrainian Custom. Guests would come for as long as they wanted.. They would get the best room in the house.. Guests were payed for when they went to the restaurant.

7 New York’s Custom. New York’s customs are different. Guests usually come for one or two days.. Guests pay for themselves.. Guests stay at a hotel.

8 In Odessa my mother had a very simple life. There weren’t as many competitions for jobs, colleges were free. Life wasn’t as expensive as in New York. Odessa New York Life In Odessa!

9 From Odessa to America!. My Mom and grandmother immigrated December 20, 1986.. She immigrated for better job opportunities.. Pull factors- promise of freedom, grandpa lived In America.. Push factor- no political freedom.. Struggles- language problems, lack of job.. When my mother first came to America.

10 Transportation/Struggles. My mom arrived to America 12/20/86.. My mother’s mom struggles were language barriers, lack or job, and money.. Lack of health insurance.. My mom feels she overcame her struggles, she was able to become a nurse

11 Over Coming struggles!. My mom overcame her struggles by being able to go to college and getting a diploma. She was able to finish Long Island University Nursing School.. She now works with many people of different nationalities, and religions.. Since she was able to overcome her struggles I am now able to live in a decent apartment and have a decent education

12 Comparing to the First Jewish Immigrants. First Jewish immigration Comparison Mom’s immigration. Eastern European, came to escape Pogroms. Discrimination. Mom came for better job opportunities.. Came by ship to Ellis Island. Lack of language. Came by plane to Italy, them to America.. No organizations that helped to settle down. No health insurance, low paying jobs.. Her dad was in America for a long time
