1 The Circuit

2 Descriptive Language Descriptive language is language that describes a person place or event. Descriptive Language helps the reader visualize, through imagery, what is happening in the story. Examples in writing: underline the descriptive language The sunset filled the entire sky with the deep color of rubies, setting the clouds ablaze. The sunset was colorful. The old man was stooped and bent, his back making the shape of a C and his head bent so far forward that his beard would nearly have touched his knobby knees had he been just a bit taller.

4 Conflicts / Challenges
Conflict resolution is a way for two or more parties to find a peaceful solution to a disagreement or overcome an obstacle. Conflict - Internal VS External Internal Conflict is a struggle within yourself External Conflict is a struggle between you and someone or something else __Conflict____=___Challenge____ Resolution Resolution is an answer or solution to something What were some of the conflicts you talked about from the text you read yesterday?

5 Conflict = Challenge

6 Looking for conflict… (15)The garage was worn out by the years. It had no windows. The walls, eaten by termites, strained to support the roof, full of holes. The dirt floor, populated by earthworms, looked like a gray road map. Roberto, Panchito, and Papá work together to ready the car. Mama brings cooked beans for the family to eat on their journey. When they arrive at their new location, the family works to clean and repair the garage where they will live. (16)That night, by the light of a kerosene lamp, we unpacked and cleaned our new home. Roberto swept away the loose dirt, leaving the hard ground. Papá plugged the holes in the walls with old newspapers and tin can tops. Mamá fed my little brothers and sisters. Papá and Roberto then brought in the mattress and placed it on the far corner of the garage. “Mamá, you and the little ones sleep on the mattress. Roberto, Panchito, and I will sleep outside under the trees,” Papá said.

7 Organize your thoughts!
1. Description: The garage was worn out by the years. It had no windows. The walls, eaten by termites, strained to support the roof, full of holes. The dirt floor, populated by earthworms, looked like a gray road map. 3. Resolution: the family works to clean and repair the garage where they will live Conflict: Panchito’s family is having to move into a place that is almost inhabitable.

8 From today’s text… Description: 100 degrees Handkerchief in mouth
Sweating 3. Resolution: drink water Conflict: It’s too hot to be working

9 Reader’s Response What descriptive language does the author use to reveal a new challenge faced by the narrator and his family? Choose two important pieces of descriptive language that describe their new home OR their new work, and explain what this evidence shows the reader. The author is using imagery to reveal a new challenge faced by Panchito. When the author describes Panchito’s new home he says, “The garage was worn out by the years. It had no windows. The walls, eaten by termites strained to support the roof.” He also describes the dirt floors covered in earthworms. The evidence helps me to see in my mind what the Panchito’s new home actually looks like. How does the family deal with this new challenge? Select a piece of evidence that shows how they deal with the challenge you chose to write about, and explain what this shows the reader. The family works with their new living situation to make it as livable as possible. It says in the text, “Roberto swept away the loose dirt…” It also tells us that his father plugged the holes in the wall. This evidence shows us that the family worked together to make the garage a more suitable home.
