5 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Background: Water use in the US Water use for public supply (potable water) have been increasing steadily since 1950, with increasing amounts of water consumed per person. The average person in the US uses almost 70 gallons of water per day, without accounting for irrigation.

6 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Background: Water use in the US Reducing water use has the added benefit of reducing energy consumption, allowing additional savings. Reducing water use reduces sewer cost and the load on municipal wastewater systems. Excessive water consumption can have negative impacts on slow-recharging ground and surface waters, as well as increasing well depth to draw deeper and deeper reserves.

7 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Saint Paul Overlay Water Requirements Goal: Reduce indoor and outdoor water consumption. Objective: Choose fixtures, landscaping elements, and irrigation systems that use less water. Strategy: Calculate water use of the project and compare it to a calculated baseline, both for interior and exterior use to ensure that savings are greater than 30% for interior and 50% for exterior; or choose fixtures that will have this effect.

9 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor Water Use: Saint Paul Overlay requirements Requirement: Predicted use of potable water in the building must be at least 30% below levels specified in Energy Policy Act of 1992. – Water coolers, water fountains (bubblers), and other beverage water devices are exempt from this requirement.

10 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: background on fixture flow rates Mandated by the Energy Policy Act of 1992: Toilets: 1.6 gpf Urinals: 1.0 gpf Bath and kitchen faucets: 2.2 gpm at 60 psi Showerheads: 2.5 gpm at 80 psi (Note that these federal maximums, and that to satisfy the Overlay requirements fixtures will need to have higher performance than those listed here)

12 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Prescriptive path (fixtures) The Saint Paul Overlay requires that all fixtures must not exceed the following flow rates: Toilets: 1.12 gpf Urinals: 0.7 gpf Bath and kitchen faucets: 1.54 gpm at 60psi Showerheads 1.75 gpm at 80 psi

13 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Prescriptive path (non-fixtures) The Saint Paul Overlay requires t he following for non-fixture water consuming devices: Clothes washers: WaterFactor of less than 6.0, and/or ENERGY STAR Qualified Dishwashers: ENERGY STAR Qualified Other water consuming devices (autoclaves, cooling towers, etc): Use available technology where available, meet or exceed 30% reduction through direct efficiency or related technologies.

14 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Performance path If using the Performance Path, the Saint Paul Overlay requires the calculation of a “base case” and a “design case.” The “base case” must use Energy Policy Act of 1992 fixture ratings, and typical use amounts for other fixtures and devices. The “design case” must show that 30% less water will be used than the “base case.” The use patterns between the “base case” and the “design case” remain the same.

15 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Performance path The Indoor_water_use_calculator is an Excel workbook available at www.sustainablebuildingpolicy.umn.edu/saintpaul. www.sustainablebuildingpolicy.umn.edu/saintpaul The calculator is used to demonstrate compliance with the Saint Paul Overlay requirements and a completed calculator must be submitted to document compliance with the performance path. The calculator may also provide an alternative method to meet the requirements of some guidelines or rating systems. It does not, however, replace any requirements internal to a guideline or rating system.

16 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Performance Path: Indoor_water_use_calculator The indoor water use calculator consists of two sections: the base case and the design case. In the base case enter the name of the occupant group, and the use pattern for each fixture.

72 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Prescriptive Path, section 1 Prescriptive Path: Achieve Fixture and Non-Fixture Requirements Fixtures: – Achieve LEED for Homes Water Efficiency (WE) Credit 3.2: Very high efficiency fixtures for 6 points or – Use these maximum flow rates for the following fixture types: Toilets: 1.12 gpf, can be an average of flow rates for dual flush toilets. Bathroom Faucets/Aerators: 1.54 gpm at 60 psi Kitchen Faucets/Aerators: 1.54 gpm at 60 psi Showerheads: 1.75gpm at 80 psi LEED for Homes

73 SAINT PAUL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING POLICY Indoor water use: Prescriptive, Non-Fixture Devices Non-Fixtures: – Choose non-fixture devices that use, when available, at least 30% less water than the Energy Policy Act of 1992. Water coolers, water fountains, and other beverage water devices are exempt from this requirement. If dishwashers are included in the project, use ENERGY STAR Qualified models. If clothes washers are included, use washers that have a water factor less than 6.0 or that are ENERGY STAR qualified. LEED for Homes
