The Physics Nobel 1901-2011 The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind. The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiological or medical work by the Caroline Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm, and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting. Physics Nobel for 2012 First (1901) physics prize: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923) "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays subsequently named after him" He did not show any special aptitude, but showed a love of nature and was fond of roaming in the open country and forests. He was especially apt at making mechanical contrivances, a characteristic which remained with him also in later life. In 1862 he entered a technical school at Utrecht, where he was however unfairly expelled, accused of having produced a caricature of one of the teachers, which was in fact done by someone else. 7. Quantum world Particles form shadows, waves go around obstructions and form fringes and ripples (interference pattern) Wave particle duality, at the micro level can’t tell the difference. A particle forms interference and a wave carries momentum. Lasers and nonlinear optics, manipulation of photons by atoms and atoms by photons Super matter as another example: a superfluid is a fabric. Need to learn a lot more. Wineland –ions probed by photons, ions in traps Dehmelt Haroche – photons moved by atoms, cavity quantum electrodynamics Cohen Tannoudji Particles as waves interfere, wavelengths have to match => special effects such as discrete energies.. Photon a particle travels a foot in a nanosecond. Particle like behavior in bouncing off of another. Quantum effects in particles in a trap. Photons held between two mirrors. Quantum effects are diminished by environment and heat. Hence high vacuum and low temperatures.
