2 Agenda  General graduate employment trends  Monash graduate employment outcomes  Employment and Career Development support for Monash students  Useful resources for investigating graduate employer and career information

“Three years after the global financial crisis we are still seeing its lingering effects as graduate recruiter activity in the labour market remains flat. However, our research also shows that unemployment is not a long-term concern for graduates and it’s important to understand that getting a degree is not about the first job after university: it’s about the potential for huge personal growth and a life-time of advantage in the labour market.” GCA Research Manager, Mr Bruce Guthrie 3

4 Graduate employment trends These figures come from the Australian Graduate Survey, which is an annual survey of graduates from Australian higher education institutions. More than 168,000 graduates responded in 2011.  76 per cent of new bachelor degree graduates available for full-time employment had found a job within four months of completing their studies. This is comparable with the 2010 figure and down from around 79 per cent in 2009.  Bachelor degree graduates from the fields of mining engineering, medicine and pharmacy achieved the best employment outcomes in 2010, with more than 97 per cent of graduates from these fields securing full-time employment within four months of graduation  New graduates who found full-time employment employed a number of strategies, with one-in-four graduates (26.4 per cent) in a full-time job having found that job via the internet. An additional 14.5 per cent found their jobs via personal networks (family and friends), one-in-ten found their job via their university careers service, and the remainder used a variety of strategies including approaching employers directly.

ECD: career development learning programs Professional transitions program: in conjunction with faculties. The program aims to increase students’ ability, confidence and motivation to transition professionally from their degree into the work place. Delivery includes face-to-face activities and online materials. 15

Interesting Career Gateway facts: In 2011:  We had over 23000 job opportunities available on Career Gateway  Over 1.2million job ad views by students Currently  Over 30,000 students registered on the system  We process approximately 30 new jobs every day (excluding weekends)  On Monday alone (with students on exams and during a quiet time) 738 positions were viewed, 285 student logins  The system also incorporates Volunteer opportunities in a sister system, Volunteer Gateway. 16

Searching for jobs on Career Gateway  Students can save searches for positions (e.g. list all casual jobs advertised in the last 14 days)  The search is refreshed according to the student's saved selections.  Students can browse positions by employer with the employers profile and details or by service (service including: casual/part-time, graduate, vacation, Internships)  For ease of access there is a link directly to Graduate programs (i.e. large organisations with employment development programs for students) https://careergateway.monash.edu.au/JobSearch.chpx 17

Resume Builder  Students are able to build a resume from their profile section where personal details, experiences and skills are recorded. The resume builder draws from the information a student enters and puts it into a specific format according to the types of jobs they are applying for  Even with minimum details such as name, address, contact details, the resumes they can download have instructions on what information to include and how to format their resume. 18

Events system  Career Gateway is the main location for students to register and find out about career related events on campus. They are sent reminders prior to the events they book for.  Students can –meet and network with employers on campus, –attend lunchtime career seminars on topics such as interviews, writing tailored job applications, –attend our annual careers festivals and forums such as accounting and beyond, Careers GradFest, Science Industry Night  Over 17,000 students attended our group activities in 2011 (careers fairs, employer info sessions, career seminars, forums, intensives (not including our work with faculties in the curriculum) 19
