September 9 th ( A), 2014 September 10 th (B), 2014 Welcome to Science Class

1.2 A Better Book Support Design (cont’d) 1.3 The Science of Structures

Study Hall: 8:45 – 9:15 Select A, B, or C on your index card 1. Which of the following scientists studies animals? A. Botanist, B. Zoologist, C. Geologist 2. What does a volcanologist study? A. Constellations, B. Plants, C. Volcanoes 3. Which of the following scientists studies insects? A. Mycologist, B. Ornithologist, C. Entomologist 4. Albert Einstein was a scientist famous for his work on physics. Where was he born? A. Germany, B. United States, C. France 5. Which of the following scientists studies the oceans? A. Oceanographer, B. Astronomer, C. Meteorologist

And the answers are: 1. Which of the following scientists studies animals? A. Botanist, B. Zoologist, C. Geologist 2. What does a volcanologist study? A. Constellations, B. Plants, C. Volcanoes 3. Which of the following scientists studies insects? A. Mycologist, B. Ornithologist, C. Entomologist 4. Albert Einstein was a scientist famous for his work on physics. Where was he born? A. Germany, B. United States, C. France 5. Which of the following scientists studies the oceans? A. Oceanographer, B. Astronomer, C. Meteorologist

Warm Up: Block 2 and 3 See if you can determine what the following magnified photos are. Number your index card from 1 to 5. 1.1. 2.2. 3.3. 4..4.. 5.

The Answers:

Homework check… Open to the page in your notebook where you completed the homework assignment… I will come around and check to make sure you completed the homework

1.2 A Better Book Support (cont’d) 1. Find the page labeled 1.2 A Better Book Support Design -this is what we did Friday (A) / Monday (B) 2. On this page you should find vocabulary word Iteration 3. Add vocabulary word Solution Briefing – then copy the definition (DIV 10) Questions? 2 minutes

Copying vs. Crediting Teacher will read aloud page DIV 12

Copying vs. Crediting Scientists are always building on each other’s ideas The idea of giving credit to others when you build from their ideas is not copying! Copying does not give credit to the people who thought of the ideas you may have used!

Building on and Benefit from Each Other’s Ideas We will read pages DIV 13 together

1.2 A Better Book Support (cont’d) 1. Find the page labeled 1.2 A Better Book Support Design (this is what we did Friday (A) / Monday (B) 2. On this page you should now find 2 vocabulary words Iteration and Solution Briefing 3. Add 3 rd vocabulary word Collaborate – copy definition (DIV 13) Questions? 2 minutes

Next we will … Be exploring matter, gravity, center of mass, what makes structures strong, and what makes a structure stable….

In this unit we will … Try to figure out what is matter…. What is gravity and why did some of our book supports fail causing the textbook to fall onto the table….

1.3 The Science of Structures Label page 13 in your notebook 1.3 The Science of Structures add entry to table of contents You will be recording 5 vocabulary words shortly (use the entire page to define these 5 important vocabulary words)

1.3 The Science of Structures We will read page DIV 15 together Boys you will be reading about Matter Girls you will be reading about Gravity Then we will define these new vocabulary words during a “rotation around the room activity” Questions?

1.3 The Science of Structures You will count off from 1 – 5 and then report to the station matching your number As you rotate around 5 stations, you will record each vocabulary word and write the definition 1.Matter2. Volume 3. Atom4. Molecule 5. Gravity 1 minutes per station !!!

1.3 The Science of Structures Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass It can be a solid, liquid, or a gas In our previous challenge, the book, the book support, the air in our classroom, and the tables we worked on were all examples of matter

What is Matter! Introduction to Matter : http://www.educreations.com/lesson/view/introduction-to- matter/1730652/ http://www.educreations.com/lesson/view/introduction-to- matter/1730652/ Stop at 2:26 min/sec

1.3 The Science of Structures Volume measures how much space something takes up Imagine if I had 2 containers the exact same size: one was filled with water and the other was filled with whipped crème Which one do you think has more mass? The container filled with water Which one has more volume? The containers have equal volumes because they are exactly the same size

1.3 The Science of Structures Gravity caused our book to fall towards Earth when our support was not strong enough The book falls because there is a pull between the book and Earth therefore the book falls toward Earth When the book was properly supported, it did not fall toward Earth

Gravity http://www.brainpop.com/science/motionsforcesandtime/ gravity/

1.3 The Science of Structures What design seemed to work best during our design challenge? Columns!!! Turn to page DIV 17 We are going to read together section Structures with Columns

1.3 The Science of Structures Today you will be using sponges to think about the following concepts: Volume Mass Gravity You will be recording this information below your 5 vocabulary words Every student will record this information into their notebooks You will begin by drawing this table…

Draw this table (below your 5 vocabulary words) massvolume Sponge 1 Sponge 2 Gravity - explain

Today’s Groups…. I will shortly assign 3 people to work together This is your group today! Each group will receive 2 sponges (labeled sponge 1 or sponge 2) Questions?

1.3 The Science of Structures Working in pairs, you will Determine Volume of both sponges (length x width x height) using a ruler Determine Mass of both sponges (dry vs. wet) * using teacher’s help Explain Gravity (what is it and how you would demonstrate gravity to a 1 st grader using your sponge) Again you will be recording this information below your 5 vocabulary words in the table Every student will record this information into their notebooks

1.3 The Science of Structures You will have 20 minutes To determine mass = I will call each group over to use the balance If you are not at the balance, then you are calculating volume and explaining gravity Questions?

Quiz (On Sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3) On September 11 th - A Day On September 12 th - B Day You will be given a study guide to help you review the science concepts we have learned thus far Bring something to work on or read when done You will take your quiz during the first part of class, then we will begin our next challenge – The Sandwich Cookie Challenge
