EXTENDED ESSAY IN ECONOMICS An extended essay in Economics provides you with the opportunity to undertake in-depth research in Economics in an area of personal interest. It gives you the opportunity to develop research skills, to apply economic theory to real world situations and to analyze and evaluate the outcomes of your research.
How should you choose your topic You must choose a topic and a question that allows you to apply economic theory that you have learnt in the course. In choosing your topic, you will need to think of the research that you are able to do. Try to think of topics where you can gather some primary data, either through questionnaires, surveys, or interviews. Secondary data, particularly statistical data is very useful for Economics essays.
Examples of titles for guidance What market form characterizes the petrol supply industry in my area of Madrid ? To what extent has the increase in the minimum wage in Bangladesh affected the Dhaka garment workers? To what extent has the increase in exchange rate of the euro affected the tourist industry in La Marina,Spain ? What has been the economic effect of water privatization on the farming industry in my region of Zambia ?
Important guidelines Theories, tools, models, graphs and skills learned during the IB Economics course should be applied to the topic. Avoid writing an historical, narrative essay. Essay should be analytical rather than descriptive. Answer your research question using economic concepts and theories. Present data in a visually appealing manner: charts, graphs and tables.
