World Class Standards © ETSI 2007 All rights reserved ETSI Tomorrow’s World Today

World Class Standards 2 ETSI – A Global Player  Globally applicable standards for Information & Communications Technologies:  Telecommunications  Radiocommunications  Broadcasting  Other related areas  Officially recognised European Standards Organization  Independent, Not-for-profit  Direct member participation  Almost 700 members  18,000 publications available for free  ISO 9001 : 2000 Certified

World Class Standards 3 Some of our World Class Standards  GSM - Developed by ETSI  2.4 billion users in over 200 countries  1.3 million new users every day!!  ETSI’s Lawful Interception  Being deployed in Europe, USA and Australia, where laws are being developed to comply with the ETSI Standard  DECT – Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications  200 million terminals in more than 110 countries  DVB system specifications  Based on DVB Project proposals  Services available on every continent

World Class Standards 4 Some of our World Class Standards  TETRA  900 contracts in more than 80 countries  TISPAN  Participation from all regions on NGN (Next Generation Networks)  Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)  The ETSI IPR Policy is a world leader and reference in its field

World Class Standards 10 Security and algorithms  We are a world leader in creating cryptographic algorithms and protocols to prevent fraud and unauthorised access to ICT and broadcast networks, and to protect customers’ privacy  Including:  Algorithms to protect GPRS, GSM and 3GPP communications  Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) receiver algorithm for PBX and Central Office applications used around the world, outperforming all traditional solutions  Conditional Access for TV etc

World Class Standards 11 Security and algorithms  Lawful Interception  ETSI’s European LI handover specification has been adopted by carriers and regulatory bodies around the world, including the USA and Australia  Other LI standards in preparation include WLAN  Smart Cards  GSM SIM card standards for security, authentication etc  Our work has extended the use of the SIM for 3G and other applications including access control to WLANs and PC security functions  Electronic signatures  Supporting the development of a European electronic signature infrastructure

World Class Standards 12 We are also a Service Provider  Protocol and Testing Competence Centre ( PTCC )  Supporting ETSI committees on the application of formal techniques in standards on a daily basis  Development of test specifications (conformance and interoperability) www.etsi.org/ptcc  Interoperability testing (Plugtests™)  Validation of standards and prototypes through interoperability events - www.etsi.org/plugtests  Forum hosting (Forapolis)  Support services to any forum with technical specification activities - www.forapolis.com  Protocol and Testing Competence Centre ( PTCC )  Supporting ETSI committees on the application of formal techniques in standards on a daily basis  Development of test specifications (conformance and interoperability) www.etsi.org/ptcc  Interoperability testing (Plugtests™)  Validation of standards and prototypes through interoperability events - www.etsi.org/plugtests  Forum hosting (Forapolis)  Support services to any forum with technical specification activities - www.forapolis.com

World Class Standards 13 Users matter to ETSI  We are unique in having a comprehensive Human Factors standardization activity to support and complement our technical work  We are a world leader in human issues in the use of ICT  We have access to world-leading multi-disciplinary skills in human sciences and engineering  Our Human Factors guides, specifications and Technical Reports make ICT usable and enjoyable by everybody

World Class Standards 14 Our IPR Policy leads the field  Our goal is to ensure an ETSI standard cannot be blocked by the refusal of an IPR holder to grant licences for the use of his Essential IPR  Our IPR Policy defines the obligations and rights of Members…  …in respect of the identification and notification of IPRs essential for ETSI standards  IPR statement and licensing declaration forms available on the web  The ETSI IPR Policy defines our obligations to inform users of standards about Essential IPRs by: publishing details in SR 000 314 publishing details in standards wherever possible publishing details on the web http://webapp.etsi.org/IPR
