2 The first inhabitants came to Kenya from Ethiopia in 2000 B.C. The inhabitants were nomadic Cushitic- speaking people The Portuguese found a route around the African Cape of Good Hope and began to invade the east coast of Africa in the 16 th Century. 3 Push and Pull Factors First populated by small tribes called the Kikuyu, Kamaba, Luo, and Masai Arab traders and the Arabian Peninsula came to Kenya from other parts of Africa Arab traders made a bustling trading center De Gama sent word back to Europe that Africa had riches and Portuguese explorers invaded East Africa The British wanted Africa for the fertile land around Lake Victoria on the Kenya- Uganda border They were from what is now Sudan and Ethiopia and moved to what is now Kenya in 2000 B.C. 4 1963- Kenya gains independence with Kenyatta as prime minster. 1964- The Republic of Kenya is formed. 1969- Assassination of government minster. 1978- Kenyatta dies in office, succeeded by vice president Daniel Arap Moi.
