5. AIMS and OBJECTIVES The organisation’s main objective is: to work towards community-building, social cohesion and the uplift of all Hogsback residents

10. PROJECTS Our first project was GARDEN WOODWORK The Garden Furniture project leader is Zolani Zwanana, and these and other items are made to order. They will be able to make many more when Jikani assists them in acquiring tools.

11. PROJECTS BEADWORK A large number of beaded ankle-bracelets were ordered for the Backpackers’ Conference in September Marie Kloth started our beadworkers off with expert training

12. PROJECTS SEWING Nomthunzi Khashe sews some of the 150 goody-bags for the Backpackers’ Conference. Jikani has three sewing machines and an overlocker.

13. PROJECTS COMPUTER SCHOOL Training is conducted by Vuvu, from the Tyumie Valley Schools Project By next year, one of the students will have been fast=tracked to become the Trainer

14. MALIKANYE PRE-SCHOOL Work has just begun on a Pre-School on the Hunterstoun property belonging to Francis and Tim Wilson, to serve the village of Masipumelele. This is a project of Jikani’s, but has its own Constitution and bank account. Jikani will support it with help and advice until it can stand on its own two feet. Busi Ngalo is the well-qualified Principal.

15. BEANIES FOR CHILDREN Each year a group of Johannesburg women spend their 67 minutes knitting for our children

16. PROJECTS CLAY ANIMALS These exquisite works of art are strongly reminiscent of early bushman paintings to be found in caves in the Eastern Cape. Their fantasy shapes and lively decoration are to be treasured. The artists ‘bake’ but do not fire them, with the result that they are very fragile. Jikani has acquired a kiln in the hopes of making them more robust so that they can be transported to other parts of the country, and of the world.

17. SALES TRAINING FOR HOG-SELLERS Starting in October 2014, there will be some sales training for the hog- and stick-sellers taking place in Jikani. This will cover aspects of hospitality and customer service.

19. ULTIMATE GOAL Ultimately we envision a Hogsback society which reflects the Rainbow Nation – where the Racial Divide has been crossed; where the Financial Divide has disappeared; where this small community all enjoy the wealth of beauty and opportunity Hogsback provides.

23. VISION - PREMISES 1.THE SHOP The front area will be for Second Time Around charity shop, to provide articles at low prices for the poor and to fund running costs. The back area will house the office (admin and employment agency) and the training room.

25. VISION - PROPERTY A major problem on the Mountain is drunken- ness, and because of this, Jikani has been declared an alcohol-free zone. It is hoped that this will kelp to make it a safe space for tourists as well as for local men, women and children.

26. VISION - PREMISES 2.The House On the left there will be a studio apartment which will be let, the income financing rates, electricity, water and maintenance costs. The centre room will be the meeting/training room. The bedrooms will house computers, sewing and beading. The kitchen will become the demo kitchen for training and fundraising.

27. PROPOSED HOUSE PLAN All this area will be taken up with lawn, but flat stones will provide a walk way for the front of the house, the separate entrance round the side, and the approach to the Sasso area, where a soup kitchen will operate during winter

28. VISION - PROPERTY The developing entrepreneurs need to be encouraged to become self-sustaining profit centres, and to move on to their own expanded premises. The eventual plan would then be for the house to become a home for Orphans and Vulnerable Children.

29. VISION - PROPERTY THE ROOFED AREA This will eventually become the showroom for items created by our crafters and exports will be handled here. Jikani Crafters is in the process of being registered and this registration will open the doors to government funding.

VISION - PROPERTY It could be an idea to locate two (or three?) containers behind the roofed area one for woodworking of various types – with the tools securely stored; One for the tools and materials needed for concrete bricks, lintels, pavers and other building items; A possible third for a hairdresser.

31. VISION – THE CORNER AREA Most of our local children have no play areas where they can congregate, or where they can use playground equipment for gross motor development. We envisage placing equipment (already promised) once the property is adequately fenced, alongside the Wolf Ridge Road

32. VISION - COMMUNITY Jikani is the one place where all sectors of the community can feel at home. Before any development of the roofed area takes place, it will be a place for Storytelling round the fire; Public Holiday celebrations; Youth gatherings; Theatre-in-the-round.

34. VISION - EMPLOYMENT One of the main aims of Jikani is to broker high employment. Our plan is to build up a data base of local people with their qualifications and experience, along with possible employers with their preferences. Job applicants will have their references and their police records checked so that a Jikani Recommendation will carry weight. Applicants will carry laminated cards to carry. Both Employee and Employer will be asked for feedback

VISION - EMPLOYMENT Likely candidates will be sent for specific skills training at recognised centres; Suitable candidates will be placed in apprenticeships; Short courses in Confidence and Self-Image, Improved Literacy, First Aid, Reading Recipes, Home Nursing, Budgeting, Civics, Conversational English, Conversational Xhosa will also be held. An Alcoholics Anonymous chapter is on the cards

36. THE WAY FORWARD Our biggest hurdle is providing sufficient work- and storage space. Several projects are on hold until we can accommodate them. Equal to that has ben our urgent need for a full- time Administrator who will be able to oversee and integrate al the different activities, as well as maintaining our Internet presence. The second is, of course, sufficient cash flow to enable those projects to operate efficiently.

39. THE WAY FORWARD We believe that the acquisition either of the land or of a sure tenancy will open avenues for developing the site for better service. We are already working on good succession- planning so that the black section of the community will play an increasing role in the governance and operation of the organisation. The support we have had from the community has been nothing short of miraculous.
