Definition Intramuscular injection is the method to inject certain medication solutions into muscles.

Sites General principle: the sites should have well developed muscles,
be away from large nerves, blood vessels and bones.

How should we implement
the intramuscular injection?

Assess the condition of the patient.

Wash hands and wear mouth mask.

Prepare equipments. appropriate disposable syringe and needle
sterile swabs disinfectant (iodine tincture & alcohol) medication (drug)

Carry the equipments to the bedside.
Explain the injection to the patient.

Draw up the medication solution.

Pull the curtain for privacy.
Position the patient for access to the injection site.

Select the appropriate injection site.

Clean the site with iodine tincture & alcohol swabs
using a circular motion.

Allow the skin to air-dry.
Place the dry swab between the third and fourth finger of your left hand.

Remove the needle guard. Eject air in syringe thoroughly.

Using your left hand, make the skin taut.

Insert the needle through the skin
with a quick dartlike thrust at 90 degrees angle.

Put back gently on the plunger
to be sure the needle is not in a blood vessel.

If no blood appears in the syringe, inject the medication slowly.

Remove the needle quickly. Press the injection site with the dry swab.

Wash hands and record.
