Learning Target: I can describe the causes of the Renaissance by actively engaging in a class lecture and discussion and answering questions on the Renaissance.

Magna Carta: Clause 1 “FIRST, THAT WE HAVE GRANTED TO GOD, and by this present charter have confirmed for us and our heirs in perpetuity, that the English Church shall be free, and shall have its rights undiminished, and its liberties unimpaired. That we wish this so to be observed, appears from the fact that of our own free will, before the outbreak of the present dispute between us and our barons, we granted and confirmed by charter the freedom of the Church's elections - a right reckoned to be of the greatest necessity and importance to it - and caused this to be confirmed by Pope Innocent III. This freedom we shall observe ourselves, and desire to be observed in good faith by our heirs in perpetuity.”

The Religious Schism

The Church in Avignon  Home of the Catholic Church from approximately 1310 to 1377.  In 1377 Pope Gregory XI brought the Catholic Church back to Rome  Many Archbishops did not agree with this move and wanted it to remain in Avignon.

Creation of Two Popes Pope Gregory XI died in 1378 The Cardinals who were electing a new pope came to a compromise to elect a pope who had lived in Avignon but was Italian, Pope Urban VI Pope Urban VI was found to be crazy and so another pope was chosen, Clementine VII Clementine VII was unable to enter Rome with Pope Urban VI in power, so he went to Avignon.

The Third Pope Having two popes did not work, so in 1410 another Council met in Pisa to unite the Church and elected Pope John XXIII who tried to get the popes in Rome and Avignon to resign. Finally in 1417 Pope Martin V was elected and agreed upon by all of the existing popes and cardinals

The impact of the Great Schism: People began to doubt the Church and the divinity of the Pope, realized that the Church had flaws.
