2. Some Vocabulary CBD = Central Business District Linear = Town with lined shape. Dispersed = Town with each building far and far away. Nucleated = Town with buildings all together. Settlement = (Explanation next page) Site = (Explanation page after next page)

3. What is settlement? Settlement is a place where people live. There are different kinds of settlements. One of them is market town. Market town has many shops and markets. People buy and sell thing there. Next one is industrial town. Industrial town is settlement where people work. It has many factories and office. Next one is port. Port is a place where people import and export things by water. Finally, the last one is resort. Resort is a place where people play and rest. There are shapes of settlements. First one is dispersed shape. Dispersed shape is like every houses are spread out. Second one is nucleated and the building is all together. Linear shape is shape like line and the building are following them

4. What is site? Site is reason why people live in that settlement. People have different kind of sites. Some people thinks that first thing is to live in safe place. Some people thinks that first thing is to live in place with plenty of foods. Some people thinks that first thing is to live in place near the river. Like these, people have different opinions why do they live there (Place they live)? Best site would be place that has almost everything I need. One of most important thing is money. We need to think about ‘Can I afford to this house or settlement?’. So it means that can I pay for house, energy, food and anything else we need?

5. Seoul Seoul settlements over time.

6. 1900s This settlement was inner city. It is a nucleated place. Houses were all together. I think this place is industrial town. In 1900s, Seoul had many farmlands but not this much. The picture is black and white, because camera was not good enough to take color picture. The place that I circled is rich house.

7. 1950s This was the CBD in Seoul at 1950s. It has a nucleated shape too. It has more cars and more big buildings. From 1950s Seoul innovated. Before 1950s other countries didn’t know if Korea was existing or not. However, from 1950s people started to learn about Korea.

8. 2000s It is CBD again. The quality of picture is much better. It has many big building and wide roads. It is more nucleated. Now almost 80% of countries know Seoul. Part that I circled with red is resort. The other part circled with green is industrial town. Most of other buildings are houses.

11. New York New York settlement over time

12. 1900s 1980s of Seoul is same as 1900s of New York. Now it’s almost the same but not at 1900s. It has linear shape. I think this town is CBD and it is market town. I think the part that I circled is like people are doing trades. Purple part is people buying goods.

13. 1950s Now they are nucleated. I think this is picture of industrial town and port. This town is CBD. Now many thing has changed. It is like 2000s of Seoul. However, the color of this picture is still black and white. New York was huge city. New York city changed a lot. I was like different world.

14. 2000s When I looked at this picture I was little bit disappointed. New York didn’t developed like they did between 1900s ~ 1950s. However, it was great city since 1950s so it doesn’t matter. This place is CBD again. Also, it is industrial town. The quality of picture is better.

17. Dubai Dubai settlement over time

18. I couldn’t find picture for Dubai at 1900s and 1950s. However, I can tell you why and explain about Dubai at 1900s and 1950s. I chose Dubai even though there was no pictures because Dubai changed so much from 1900s to 2000s. At 1900s and 1950s Dubai was desert and it was bad settlement. See the difference between 1991 to 2005. Can you imagine difference between 1900s to 2000s ?

19. Dubai became rich by selling oil. They started to sell oil since 1971. They started to earn money and they finally used it since 2000. Dubai showed that any country can develop a lot in short time. Dubai built 7 stars hotel and big buildings.

20. I think, from now, Dubai need to think about taking care of air and nature. Other country like China had failed at keeping air clean. Now all Dubai need to do is keep developing their country and take care of nature and air. When they try to only develop digital life, their country will be desert again easily because Dubai was desert already. I think Dubai will be very good city if they keep these thing in their mind.
