PARTNERING WITH DEVELOP: PROGRAM & PROJECTS OVERVIEW DEVELOP National Program National Aeronautics and Space Administration

What is DEVELOP? Decision Makers DEVELOP addresses environmental and public policy issues through interdisciplinary research projects that apply the lens of NASA Earth observations to community concerns around the globe. Bridging the gap between NASA Earth Science and society, DEVELOP builds capacity in both participants and partner organizations to better prepare them to address the challenges that face our society and future generations. DEVELOP Website: http://develop.larc.nasa.govhttp://develop.larc.nasa.gov DEVELOP is an incubator for applied NASA Earth science projects Earth Observations

DEVELOP Locations Federal Nodes NASA Ames Research Center – Moffett Field, CA NASA Goddard Space Flight Center – Greenbelt, MD NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory – Pasadena, CA NASA Langley Research Center – Hampton, VA NASA Marshall Space Flight Center – Huntsville, AL NASA Stennis Space Center – Stennis, MS USGS at Colorado State University – Fort Collins, CO NOAA National Climatic Data Center – Asheville, NC Regional Nodes International Research Institute – Palisades, NY Mobile County Health Department – Mobile, AL Patrick Henry Building – Richmond, VA University of Georgia – Athens, GA Wise County Clerk of Court’s Office – Wise, VA International Node International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) – Kathmandu, Nepal Newest Node Addition (Sum 2015) BLM at Idaho State University – Pocatello, ID

DEVELOP Project Characteristics Address community concerns relating to real-world environmental issues Partner with decision makers who can benefit from using NASA Earth observations to enhance decision making Utilize and highlight the application of NASA Earth observations Science advisors and mentors from NASA and partner organizations Research is conducted by small interdisciplinary teams under guidance of NASA and partner science advisors Rapid feasibility - only 10 weeks long! 350+ Participants & 80+ Projects Per Year > >

DEVELOP Water Resources Projects 1. Alabama Water Resources : Incorporating NASA Earth Observations in Spatial and Temporal Water Quality Monitoring of Alabama’s Inland Waters (Marshall) 2. Lake Erie Water Resources : Utilizing NASA Satellite Data to Model Indicators of Harmful Algal Blooms in the Maumee River Watershed of Lake Erie (Ames) 3. Mississippi Water Resources II : Mapping Extent and Modeling Land Use of Critical and Endangered Watersheds to Assist Restoration Efforts and Conservation Planning Using NASA Earth Observations (Mobile) 4. Mississippi Water Resources & Eco Forecasting II : Utilizing NASA Earth Observations to Assist the Audubon Mississippi Coastal Bird Stewardship Program with Habitat Monitoring and Restoration Planning Activities (Stennis) 5. Georgia Inland Water Resources III : Developing a Cyanobacteria Detection Tool for Georgia Inland Waters Using NASA Landsat 8 OLI Data for Water Quality Protection and Restoration (UGA) 10 Water Resource Projects in Spring 2015 > > 6. Coastal Mid-Atlantic Water Resources III : NASA Earth Observations and UAS Inputs for Estimating Water Balance in the Coastal Mid- Atlantic Region (Langley) 7. Costa Rica water Resources : Utilizing NASA Earth Observations to Develop a Comprehensive Water Budget for the Arenal- Tempisque Irrigation District of Costa Rica (UGA) 8. Los Angeles Water Resources: Monitoring Streamflow Regimes using NASA Sensor Data to Aid Classification-Based Decision Making for Streamwater Management in Los Angeles County (JPL) 9. Colorado Water Resources: Utilizing NASA Earth Observations to Identify Water Quality Sampling Sites in Denver, Colorado (Langley) 10. North Carolina Water Resources: Utilizing NASA Earth Observations to Monitor Harmful Algal Blooms in the Albemarle Sound of North Carolina (Langley)

Get Involved Propose a Project Idea - project request form on DEVELOP’s website at bottom of Partner Page. Partner with a Project Team - Collaborator - Work directly with a DEVELOP project team and provides some kind of leveraged resource (advising, data, model, software, funding, etc.), but doesn’t actually use the project’s products or methodologies to make a decision or policy. End-User - Receives results and methodologies from DEVELOP and can use the project’s products or methodologies to make a decision or policy. They may also provide some kind of resources (advising, data, model, software, funding, etc.), but it is not required. Boundary Organization - A organization that disseminates the project’s results to other end-users, decision makers, policy-makers, etc. Project activity takes place at an established DEVELOP node Partner Provides: Project Idea, Advising, etc. DEVELOP Provides: Participants (pay and limited travel), Project Management

Project Idea & Proposal Timeline Fall Projects Collection of ideas & writing of proposals: due mid-April Fall Term: mid-September to mid-November Spring Projects Collection of ideas & writing of proposals: due mid-September Spring Term: late January to early April Summer Projects Collection of ideas & writing of proposals: due early December Summer Term: early June to early August
