Mrs. Barth Portraits and Self Portraits

Portrait Portraits usually show what a person looks like as well as revealing something about the subject's personality. Portraits can be made of any sculptural material or in any two-dimensional medium. Portraiture is the field of portrait making and portraits in general.subjectsculpturalmaterialtwo-dimensionalmedium

Artists on Portraiture "Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter." Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) The point on which we differ is one which a long experience of portrait painting has made me perfectly familiar-I have very often been reproached with giving a hard expression to ladies' portraits, especially when I have retained some look of intelligence in a face." John Singer Sargent, undated letter

Portraits The Mona Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci When do we have our portrait taken? (not just our picture taken, but a “portrait” done?) Senior portraits Birthday Holidays Engagement Weddings

Portraiture Why do you suppose we have our portrait taken at these significant times in our lives?

Self-Portraits A portrait done of the artist, by the artist. If a portrait reveals something about the subject, can a self portrait do the same thing? Why or why not? Can a self-portrait be introspective…almost to the point of invasiveness?

Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh painted many, many self portraits during his career.

Vincent Van Gogh Knowing what you do about VanGogh…cutting the ear off, never sold a painting in his life, etc… do you see any of that reflected in his self-portraits?

Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo was a fiercely independent woman… she was in a crippling bus accident as teen which shaped the rest of her life and is reflected in much of her work.

Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo was not an unattractive woman, why might she have depicted herself as less attractive, or more masculine than she really was? Why did she leave the mono-brow?

Chuck Close Chuck close was originally a photorealistic painter… this is a painting, believe it or not! Chuck Close, "Big Self-Portrait", 1967-1968 acrylic on canvas 107 1/2 x 83 1/2

Chuck Close Unfortunately, at the height of his career he experienced a brain aneurism that left him partially paralyzed, and still leaves him wheel chair bound.

Chuck Close He has changed his style, but not his subject matter, he still continues to paint world famous portraits and self-portraits.
