1 (Still) Developing a Pathfinding US and International Science Education System: Progress Report, US HOU Yerkes Meeting Carl Pennypacker, Berkeley

2 Scorecard on US HOU: IP Software International Collaboration -- (IYA -- reach 110 Nations) Telescope Network(example) Asteroid Searching Teacher Training Big Grants (Patrick, etc.) Curriculum Development and HOU Modules Partners: TRA’s, Yerkes, Texas Regionals, etc.) PresentWithin 12 months Within 3 months

3 Remember:Energy Budget of Universe (Some HOU-affiliated people shared Gruber Prize for Dark Energy Discovery) Dark Energy: ~70% Dark Matter: ~25% ~70%

4 Example: The Yerkes Miracle 1) Field trips by children. Some of these special tours are in the evening and include viewing with small telescopes. `2) Develop Education in Astronomy and Space Science program. 3) Building on the experience with visually impaired students (Project SEE), 4)Home of Annual US-HOU 5)TRA and Teacher Conference. 6) Japan-US Exchange: Teachers and their students in the US and in Japan have reciprocal opportunities to use remotely operable telescopes at Yerkes and in Japan, 7)Outreach activities involving about 20 students and their teachers from three local high schools have been designed to coordinate with NASA's SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) mission, for which a major instrument (HAWC) is being constructed at Yerkes. 7) A major grant from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has supported intensive teacher workshops (two weeks in the summer plus follow-up weekends during the school year). This is a Math-Science 8) Chicago Public Schools, with funding through the Museum Partners Science Program, has sent teachers to one-day workshops at Yerkes (10-20 teachers per workshop, two workshops per year).

5 2009 is International Year of Astronomy! Kick-off Meeting at UNESCO HQ in Paris January 19, 2009: (Sanctioned by UN General Assembly and UNESCO, International Astronomical Union -- GHOU is a node of IYA.

6 Kenya Teacher Workshop via Internet Video: George Smoot Participated! Berkeley Nairobi

7 Preparing for IYA! (sanctioned by UN General Assembly -- GHOU is an official ‘node’ of IYA) Recruitment of ~22 US and Global TRA’s to train 110 nations in HOU (~10 video workshops/month) Fixing up Salsa J Cornerstone Activities (Jupiter’s Moons, Light, etc.) UNESCO Kick-off Meeting in Paris, Jan 19, 2009 Follow-on workshops? (lessons from Rich and Kenya) Work with ‘Single Point of Contact’ (SPOC) in each nation (SPOC are already chosen) Need Volunteer US TRA’s and other HOU Leaders to adopt five nations… ($’s???) (sign up soon)

8 Endeavoring to Enable HOU to be a Bigger Part of Normal School Curriculum Hong Kong Accord Action - coherency, hands-on, evidence based. New HOU Curriculum -- GSS Module Light Unit (Jenifer Perazzo) New Jupiter Moon Unit (Steve Carpenter)

12 Some Activities of French Hands-On Universe (FHOU) Meet regularly with teachers, scientists, and others to advance FHOU Active in Expositions and national science education events (e.g., Salon de Maths..) Arrange use of small telescopes Active in Global Science Education Reform Active in Developing Senegal HOU. Trained French teachers in Salsa J and F-HOU

13 More Activities of French Hands-On Universe (FHOU) (excerpted from email from Suzanne Faye): Use Exercises on workshops organized by the French association of teachers of physics (UDP) 1 - end of August on 2006 (60 teachers)[2 workshops) 2 - end of October on 2007 (30 teachers)[1 workshop] 3 - end of October on 2008 ( we suppose about 30 )[1 workshop] Teachers could do exercises : Cepheids, supernova, dwarf star to ExoPlanet, dark matter... We also train teachers and students every year during the weeks of science festivals. They can use now SalsaJ in their classrooms trained planetarium people a few years ago, with HOU software. This should be done again with SalsaJ.

14 On to Global Science Education: Hong Kong Accord on Global Science Education (in draft now) Many Aspects of the Accord are based on (US-G) HOU experiences and insights Create Great Science Education from the whole world for the Whole World to Share.

15 Belleuve and Pleasanton School District and Phases of the Moon/Light Unit (Jenifer Perazzo, with help from me) Coherent, important stuff for 5th graders Need to understand scattering of light to understand phases of the moon -- actually quite a sophisticated topic, with 85% of middle school graduates believing moon phases are form eclipses caused by earth. (NAEP) Uses best practice teaching and HOU Will aim for district wide implementation within a couple of years. Will be “Hong Kong Accord” Complient.

16 The Future is bright … Not without peril and often progress is slow, but almost certainly hopeful and generative, if we can listen, learn, create, and work together.
