1 Properties of Compounds
Chemistry 11 Ms. McGrath

2 Properties of Ionic compounds
Property state at room temperature crystalline solid melting point high electrical conductivity as a liquid yes solubility in water most have high solubility conducts electricity when dissolved in water

3 Properties of Molecular compounds
Property state at room temperature gas, liquid, solid melting point low electrical conductivity as a liquid no solubility in water most have low solubility conducts electricity when dissolved in water not usually

4 Ionic and Molecular Compounds
Ionic compounds contain metals and non-metals. Molecular compounds contain only non-metals. The bonds between metals and non-metals differ from the bonds between two or more non-metals. It is the difference between these types of bonds that give compounds their diverse physical properties.

5 Valence Electrons Electrons found in the outer most energy level or shell These are the electrons that participate in bonding

6 Lewis Structures Shows only valence electrons
Valence electrons are represented by dots The chemical symbol represents the nucleus (with neutrons and protons) and all the full valence shells

7 Lewis Structures Electrons fill up one energy level before moving into the higher energy levels Energy levels 1st energy level – maximum 2 electrons 2nd energy level – maximum 8 electrons 3rd energy level – maximum 8 electrons

8 Lewis Structures

9 Lewis Structures Complete #2 – 4, page 164
