2.  Let us find out what we know about some words we use frequently.  Can anyone tell us what similes are?

3. A simile is a figure of speech which is used to compare two things. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (2009) a simile is defined as a word or phrase that compares one thing to another.

4.  The two words 1. as…as 2. like are often used to show similarities. Similarities can be shown in color, quality, character, size, taste, feelings etc.  For example to show similarity in color we can say, as black as coal/charcoal.

5. To show similarity in action/behavior we can say as playful as a kitten. Let us see how these words can be used with similes.  Eats: she eats like a pig.  Ran: they ran as quickly as lightening.  Walked: the thief walked as stealthily as a cat.

6.  Big: as big as an elephant.  Small: as small as tiny stars.  Enormous: as enormous as Google.  Thin: as thin as a toothpick.

7.  Wise: as wise as Solomon  Intelligent: as intelligent as an owl  Noisy : as many waters  Brave :as brave as a lion  Slow: as slow as tortoise

8.  Sweet :as sweet as sugar.  Sour :as sour as vinegar.  Bitter: as bitter death.  Hot: as hot as pepper.

9. Once upon a time there was a big black hare that was as fat as an elephant. She ate a lot of food because she used to feel as hungry as a wolf. Since she was fat, she could not run fast like a dear. When the hunters saw her for the first time, they were at sixes and sevens. Other animals kept away from the elephant because she was as noisy as an empty tin. The hunters could not kill the elephant for food since they thought her meat would be like old boots. The hunters felt as sad as an eagle without wings.
