1 PART II The Crucifixion and Death of the Christ May 31, 2015

2 The Via Dolorosa  The Roman soldiers compelled a man to carry Christ’s cross.  The soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha.  Jesus was offered wine mixed with myrrh but he did not take it.

3 The Crucifixion  And they crucified him.

4 Roman Crucifixions  The soldiers would have carelessly laid Jesus body on the ground stretching out his arms over the cross beam.  The soldiers would drive six inch spikes through the wrist and into the cross beam.

5 Roman Crucifixions  The soldiers would then lift the cross beam to the vertical beam.  The soldiers would then drive a spike through the feet of Jesus into the vertical beam.  Jesus is now Crucified.

6 The Humiliation of the Crucifixion  The soldiers gambled on Christ’s only belongings.  They placed a sarcastic inscription over his head on the cross.  Jesus the innocent was crucified between two convicted criminals.

7 The Mockery at the Cross 1)Those who passed by blasphemed Jesus. 2)The chief priests and the scribes mocked Jesus to one another by saying that he cannot save himself. 3)Even those crucified with him scorned him.

8 Darkness at Passover  At mid-day, darkness enveloped the land for three hours.  Jerusalem must now prepare for Passover in darkness while Jesus hangs on a cross.

9 The Death of the Christ  At the 9th hour (3pm) Jesus cried out: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?  Jesus cried out loudly, took his last breath, and died.

10 After Christ’s Death  The temple curtain was torn in two – from top to bottom.  The Roman centurion declared that Jesus was indeed the Son of God.
