Opening Worship Led by The Rev. Dr. John G. McFayden, Vice President, Church Relations

Leader:In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. People:All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. 2 Call To Worship (John 1:1-5)

Leader:What has come into being with him was life, and the life was the light of all people. People:The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 3 Call To Worship (continued)

(By blending biblical images and current vignettes in the present tense, this hymn connects Christ’s promise that he is the Light of the world and his charge to his followers to be the light of the world.) 4 “Longing for Light, We Wait in Darkness” Glory to God, Hymn 314

O God, who brings light out of darkness; who raised Jesus from the darkness of death; who redeems us from the darkness of sin: we praise you for your great glory. In your presence we confess that we are not what you designed and desire us to be. You alone know how we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. By your mercy, help us to live in your light and abide in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 5 Unison Prayer and Confession

Leader:The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. People:Praise God! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Leader:May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness; People:and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. All:Amen. 6 Words of Forgiveness

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” 7 Scripture John 21:15-19

“Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.” 8 John 21:15-19 (continued)
