1 Do Now – Wednesday, 11.5.2014 Dr. Molefi Asante defines racism as prejudice against one race by another. What are some examples of racism in America today?

2 Today’s Learning Targets I can explain how and why slavery started in America. I can explain the ideology (racism) developed to justify slavery in America. I can identify and explain policies used to entrench slavery in America. I can use historical evidence to argue whether or not the American Revolution was actually revolutionary.

3 Key Vocabulary Racism – Prejudice against one race by another. “Prejudice + power.” (Operario/Fisk) This sign appeared in Detroit in 1942, in response to the Sojourner Truth housing project off of Nevada.

4 Key Vocabulary Triangular Trade – the import/export component of the European Slave Trade; Europeans exported goods and guns manufactured in Europe via slave traders; the latter traded these in Africafor captured Africans, who were taken to the colonies and traded for raw materials; the raw materials were taken to Europe and traded for manufactured goods. 5 Key Vocabulary Middle Passage – the journey by enslaved Africans aboard a slave ship across the Atlantic from Africa to the Americas (Asante)

6 Key Vocabulary Chattel – an item of personal property. Enslaved Africans were considered chattel by their enslavers.
