1 SHOP SAFETY Design & Fabrication Shop Botwood Collegiate

2 Three of the major causes of power tool injuries are:  Inattention through repetition  An unexpected event  Inexperience or over confidence

3 POWER TOOL ACCIDENTS … THEY CAN BE PREVENTED Four areas to consider:  Keep your work area safe  Electrical Safety  Developing good personal work habits  Proper tool use and care

4 I. WHAT IS A SAFE WORK AREA?  Good lighting.  Area should not be cluttered.  Work area should not be wet. (Avoid slips)  Work area well ventilated.  Work area should be level.

5 II. ELECTRICAL SAFETY CORDED TOOLS  Keep cords dry.  Avoid adapters. Match plug and receptacle.  DO NOT abuse cords.  Check chords for damage.  Use proper size extension cords.

6 II. ELECTRICAL SAFETY … CORDLESS BATTERY TOOLS  Battery chargers should be used in dry locations  DO NOT short battery terminals  Recycle old batteries.

7 III. GOOD WORK HABITS  DO NOT wear baggy clothes  Dangling jewelry is not permitted  Long hair should be placed in a pony tail.  Always wear eye protection. “FORESIGHT IS BETTER THAN NO SIGHT”  Wear hearing protection for noisy operations.  Wear a dust mask for dusty jobs.

8 III. GOOD WORK HABITS …  Always read and follow the instruction manual.  Stay alert. DO NOT use power tools when you are tired.  Use common sense.  Select the right tool for the job.  Never over reach. Stay firmly planted on both feet.

9 IV. PROPER USE AND CARE OF TOOLS  Secure work piece with clamps.  Keep blades and cutters sharp and clean.  Hold tools with both hands for better control.  Always ensure the guards are in place.  Be sure the tool switch is in the “off” position before you plug it in.  Remove wrenches and chuck keys before starting a tool.  Clean and store tools when they are not in use.
