Malaria By Anthony Rout

What Is The Disease? Infectious disease caused by a parasite called plasmodium. Travels directly to the liver cells, rapidly produces and multiplies creating cells called merozoites. Exit’s the liver cells and re-enters the blood stream, they then begin to invade the red blood cells. Quickly reproduce creating newly formed merozoites repeatedly over the next 1 to 3 days. Results in thousands of merozoites bursting out of the red blood cells every 48 – 72 hours

What Is The Cause Of The Disease? Malaria can only be transmitted from a female mosquito (Anopheles) that has been infected from a previous host. 5 identified species of parasite that the mosquitoes carry but the most commonly found species is Plasmodium falciparum Also the most lethal of all 5 species. The mosquito is a vector because it does not cause malaria itself, but it spreads the pathogen from host to host.

What Type Of Disease Is It? Malaria is a parasitic protozoa meaning that the particular protozoa can only be found in things like mosquitoes.

Who Commonly Suffers From Malaria? Most commonly found in tropic and sub tropic areas of the sub Saharan portions of Africa. Most at risk from this disease are children being more than half of the number of deaths from malaria. An estimated 655 000 deaths (with an uncertainty range of 537 000 to 907 000), mostly among African children in 2010.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Malaria? Symptoms of malaria are headaches, nausea, fever, vomiting and flu-like symptoms. This certain type of malaria normally takes 7 to 14 days for any signs or symptoms to appear. Malarial attacks consist of shaking chills, high fever, and sweating, and are often associated with fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, dry cough, muscle or joint pain, and back ache.

What Is The Treatment Of Malaria? Treatment for malaria is often just an anti- malarial drug. Effectiveness of anti-malarial drug differs with different species of the parasite. And with different stages of the parasite's life cycle.

Can Malaria Be Cured? Although Malaria can be fatal, there is a cure. The cure is the anti-malarial drugs. If the patient is treated early enough the disease can be cured. If not treated early the patient could die.
