1 Czech Republic … a look at a fantastic country…

2 The Czech Republic is situated in central Europe. It became an independent state in January 1993. It is part of the European Union. Its total area is 78.866 kmq; its population is about 10,5 million. The currency is the Czech Koruna. The Czech flag is white, blue and red. The Czech Republic is composed by three big regions: Bohemia, Moravia and Slesia.

3 Prague The Czech capital, Prague, is more than 1000 years old and is very rich in monuments and museums. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is possible to visit the monumental complex of Prague Castle, which is the largest castle in the world. The Gothic Charles Bridge and the Church of St. Nicholas, the most beautiful Baroque church in Prague, are very interesting too, so that the historical city on the Old Town Square with its famous 600 years old Astronomical Clock.

4 … other cities … The second largest city in the Czech Republic is Brno, in south Moravia, which is considered a very important university centre; it is also known for the Masarik Circuit. Other important cities are: Ostrava, next to the polish border; Pilsen, in west Bohemia, which is known worldwide for Pilsner beer; Liberec, Olomouc.

5 … other information … Manifacturing is the most important activity in the country, especially the production of cars and engineering products. Iron and steel industries are in Moravia. The main agricoltural products are maize, sugar beet, potatoes. The Czech Republic produces famous beers, including Pilsner. Wine is produced in the southern regions of Moravia and Bohemia. Hills and mountains cover about 95% of the country: ideal for skiing, mountain biking and hill walking. Famous writers are Franz Kafka and Milan Kundera.
