1 By the end of the lesson, you will be able to…
Lesson 19 Objective: Convert measures involving whole numbers and solve multi-step word problems 5th Grade Module 4– Lesson 19 K. Clauson

2 Application Problem B A
Angle A of a triangle is 1/2 the size of angle C. Angle B is 3/4 the size of angle C. If angle C measures 80 degrees, what are the measures of angle A and angle B? B A

3 Multiply Decimals 4 x 2 = 4 x 3 = 4 x 0.2 = 0.4 x 3 = 0.4 x 0.2 = 0.4 x 0.3 = 0.04 x 0.2 = 0.04 x 0.3 = 2 x 9 = 2 x 0.9 = 0.2 x 0.9 = 0.02 x 0.9 =

4 Convert Measures 1 yd = _____ ft 1 ft = _____ in
2 cups = _____ pt 1 gal = _____ qt 16 c = _____pt 8 gal = ____ _qt

5 Problem 1: 30 centimeters = _____ meters
Concept Development Problem 1: 30 centimeters = _____ meters Which is a larger unit? We are expressing a smaller unit in terms of a larger unit. Is 30 cm more or less than 1 meter? Is it more or less than half a meter? Keep this in mind as we work. We want to rename these centimeters using meters. 30 cm is the same as 30 copies of 1 cm Let’s rename 1 cm as a fraction of a meter. What fraction of a meter is 1 cm?

6 Problem 1: 30 centimeters = _____ meters
It takes 100 cm to make a meter, so 1 cm would be 1 hundredth of a meter. 100 cm = 1 meter so 1 cm = 1/100 meter 30 cm = 30 x 1 cm = 30 x 1/100 meter Now we have 30 copies of 1/100 meter How many hundredths of a meter is that in all?

7 Problem 1 Answer: 30 centimeters = _____ meters
30 cm = 30/100 = 3/10 m

8 Problem 2 : 9 inches ____ ft
9 inches = 9 x 1 inch 9 inches is 9 copies of 1 inch What fraction of a foot is 1 inch? Before we rename 1 inch, let’s estimate. Will 9 inches be more than half or less than half a foot?

9 Problem 2 Answer: 9 inches ____ ft
9 x 1/12 ft Now we have 9 copies of 1/12 ft 9 = 3

10 Problem 2b: 24 inches = ______ yard
Think: 24 inches is 24 copies of 1 inch How many inches are in a yard?

11 Work with a partner to solve!
Problem 3: Koalas will often sleep for 20 hours a day. For what fraction of a day does a Koala often sleep? What will we need to do to solve this problem? We’ll need to express hours in days. We’ll need to convert 20 hours into a fraction of a day. Work with a partner to solve!

12 Problem 3: Koalas will often sleep for 20 hours a day
Problem 3: Koalas will often sleep for 20 hours a day. For what fraction of a day does a Koala often sleep?

13 Problem 4: 15 inches = _____ feet
Note! The process of converting will be the same as we have done already, but now our answer will be greater than 1. Work with a partner to solve this problem!

14 Problem 5: 24 ounces = _____ pound

15 Get Ready to Finish the Problem Set on Your Own!
Complete Problem Set for Lesson 19. You will have 10 minutes to work! Fast finishers: Math Center Activities- choice boards, extra Sprint challenge CML packets/ worksheets Problem Solving pages 5th Grade Module 4– Lesson 19 K. Clauson

16 LET’S Debrief Take 2 minutes to check your answers with your partner.
