3 What is CAD? CAD designs an object using a computer and CAM makes the object using a computer guided machine.

4 Advantages of CAD Can be more accurate than hand-drawn designs - it reduces human error You can edit ideas, which makes it easier and cheaper to modify your design as you go along Design can be sent electronically elsewhere instantly A section of a design can be copied and pasted many times Can be zoomed in for more detailed sections No physical prototype so no wastage

5 Disadvantages of CAD The software itself can be expensive so initial costs are high. Staff need to be trained how to use the software, which also adds to costs. Requires a powerful PC.

6 What is CAM? CAM is the use of computers to control the manufacturing process using a design created in a CAD package.

7 Advantages of CAM Consistent quality of work
Can run without an operator present Slight changes to design can be implemented quickly It runs faster than a human would

8 Disadvantages of CAM Machines and equipment are expensive
Training may be required to use machines The machine may break down (need a specialist to fix) Manufacturers may become over reliant on CAM

10 Features of CAD. Zoom: Allows the architect to see the design in fine detail. Stress/strain: Allows the architect to see if there are any load bearing problems with the design before it is built. / Do calculations to see if the building is safe. / Allows the architect to see if the design of the building is safe before it is built. Walkthrough: Allows the architect to see in virtual reality what the inside of the building will look like. (Must be clearly referring to internal view). Hatching/rendering: Allows the architect to try out different finishes on the building to see the aesthetic affect / it is suitable / to pick the best. Rotate: allows the architect to see the design from all angles Wire drawing: Outline design (perspective) requires less processing to display/ permits rapid previewing. Costings – Allows a database of prices of materials to be created. The program can explore the cost of different options in a kitchen plan. 2D/3D, Layering, Library of symbols, wireframe, simulation, dimensioning, prototyping.
