Introduction

AdvantagesDisadvantages  Bandwidth Loss During Peak Hours  Not Available in Rural Areas  Hardware Fees  Security Risks  Slower Than Fiber  Widely Available  Ready Connection  Support Heavy Activities  Stable Connection  No Phone Wiring Necessary  Bundle Services  Support High Speed Cable

AdvantagesDisadvantages  Slower Than Cable  Not as Widely Available as Cable  Signal Loss by Distance  Reliability  Uses Telephone Line  Does Not Tie Phone Line  Faster than Dial-Up  Good Security  Vary Cost Per Area DSL/Copper Circuits

AdvantagesDisadvantages  Not Widely Available  High Cost Wiring Installation  Weak Wire  No Changing Location  Special Equipment  High Speed / Data Transfer  Secure  Light Weight  Cost Effective (Wire)  Trans Continental Data Link  Immune To Electro Magnetic Interference  Minimal Data Loss  Reliability Fiber

ConsiderationsChoice  AT&T U-verse Max  Download Speed: 12Mb  Upload Speed: 1Mb  Monthly Price: $29.99  Price per Mb: $2.50  Parents  2 Teenagers  1 Home Computer  2 Business Laptops  1 Gaming System  1 Tablet Residential

Residential Price Table

ConsiderationsChoice  AT&T U-Verse Max  Download Speed: 12Mb  Upload Speed: 1.5Mb  Monthly Price: $70  Price per Mb: $5.83  New Company  25 Employees w/ Computer  5 Extra Computer  All Computers Are Able to Handle The Internet Service Business

Business Price Table

Why not Cable and Fiber Why not Cable for residential and Business connectivity?  The cable offerings were more expensive  The speed choices were about the same between DSL/Cable Why not Fiber for residential connectivity?  No need for a high download/upload speed  Re-wiring cost  Higher monthly bill

 Nielsen’s Law provides us with a metric for determining what connectivity speed is going to look like down the road.  The law states that internet bandwidth can grow at an annual rate of 50%. So a 12Mb download rate could be 18Mb over the course of the year.  Slowly increase because there is an element of infrastructure behind the technology. Streets need to be dug up, cables need to be laid.  Increases in internet bandwidth take more time to reach end users Future – Nielsen’s Law

 Cost and Need  Availability  Chose DSL is most cost-effective option for the given size  Future of internet service lies in fiber connectivity  DSL will no longer be acceptable Conclusion
