The nickname of Louisiana is The Pelican State Louisiana is located in the Southeast region.

3 Capital City, Major Cities and Population
The capital city is Baton Rouge Three major cities are New Orleans, Monroe and Alexandria The current population is 4,533,372 people

4 State Flag, State Bird and State Tree
State bird is the Brown pelican State tree is the Baldcypress

5 Government The current governor of Louisiana is Kathleen B. Blanco
The current senators from Louisiana are David Vitter and Mary Landrieu

6 Borders and Geography The borders are Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana has delta, barrier beaches, marshes and rolling hills

7 Farming/Agriculture Farming is good in Louisiana because wetlands cover about one-third of the state. Silt from the Mississippi River forms a rich, dark soil. Sugarcane is the leading crop product of the state.

Dillard University located in the city of New Orleans McNeese State University is located in Lake Charles A place you can go is Grand Isle. You can fish there. Another place you can go is the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. A service offers tours there.

10 Additional Facts “Give Me Louisiana” and “You Are my Sunshine” are Louisiana’s state songs. The state motto is Union, Justice and Confidence. Louisiana’s state seal was adopted in 1902, and the state flag was adopted in 1912. In 1975, the new state Constitution went into effect. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on August 29th killing hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. In 2007, Bobby Jindal became the first person of Asian- Indian ancestry to be elected governor of a U.S. state.
