A place among other libraries - the only collection of such documents in Latvia, the development of which is determined by a purposeful acquisitions policy. ( to be continued)
Forms of digital maps at library CD-ROM or disks; digital maps and spatial data in INTERNET; GIS products- databases from Geographic Information Systems ; electronic rewiev map for the control of map series in the collection; scanned and digitized printed maps.
Project of the Cartographic Department Cartographic department in cooperation with SIA GIS Project Digitization of Latvian Topographic Maps has been started in 2000.
Topographic maps. Project Nr. A issued by an official state institution responsible for data accuracy; contains bulky cartographic information, fixed at a proper time and space; information source for people examining the dynamics of geographic data ; issued very seldom - once in several decades
Read- only- memory(ROM) in compactdisks is scanned : 1. Latvian topographic map on a scale 1:75 000 This is only one map of such a scale, comprising the whole territory of Latvia, published in the independent Latvia in the 1920-1930. 1 disk contains 105 pages.

This is a detailed map reflecting the territory of Latvia, probably maps on such a scale wont appear so soon.
Possibilities of Usage of Digitized Maps : preservation of a printed material; formation of thematic CD-ROM ; formation of data bases of library images ; offer to INTERNET ; a visual information in the electronic catalogue

The Baltic Central Library (BCL), the Department of the NLL, is forming a visual database "Riga from the end of the 19th century till the end of World War II ". 3000 the most interesting and rare images on Riga are selected from the collection of BCL ca 54 000 items from the image archive (photos, postcards, negatives) for the database. In order to preserve these unique materials and ensure their fast access the nessecity emerges to digitize these images.
The project Riga from the end of the 19th century till the end of World War II After implementation of the first stage of the project the users will have access to 3000 digitized images to view them on a screen or receive print outs. Poligraphic quality will be ensured by TIFF format on magnetooptic disks. Project implementation was started in the end of 1999. Ca. 1000 images are scanned at present. The problems are: - to acquire the necessary software to publish these images in Internet; - to ensure search.
Digitalization of postkards Riga in postcards ( 3 000 items )
