Lexelerator Legal Wiki: a lawyer’s point of view Thibault Verbiest Attorney at the bars of Brussels and Paris www.ulys.net www.droit-technologie.org thibault.verbiest@ulys.net Brussels 7 May 2008

Background –SME’s are more and more concerned with online issues. –Online worlds are not exempt of legal obligations. =>SME developing online business must be aware and advised. –Only few SME’s (and few lawyers) are up-to- date with online legal issues. =>it is necessary to inform.
3
A legal WIKI ? –Best way to inform is WIKI because it is: 1.Always online 2.For everybody from any country 3.Always active and enriched via contributors
4
How it works ? –Legal definitions give a framework everybody can understand –Using the framework : everybody can be proactive when developing a business strategy. everybody can analyse problems everybody can point out specific issues and avoid « simple » legal problems => It is essential for SME’s (lawyer clients)
5
How it works 2 ? –From a lawyer’s point of view, it is useful too : 1.clients are supposed to have been thinking before developing. =>if problems arise, they are minimized. 2.Clients are already aware of vocabulary and kind of issues =>they understand what the lawyer explains. =>They understand why the lawyer advices to do this and not this in the future.
6
Is Lexelerator the ultimate ? –It is not: SME’s are not lawyers. –It is not: some problems are only revealed « when it is too late » for a basic solution –But Lexelerator gives a basic helpful knowledge. =>Lexelerator and lawyers are complementary.
7
Can Lexelerator be upgraded ? –It must ! –New definitions (according to new online concepts and issues) must be provided. –Lexelerator could be inescapable to be well- informed (Lexelerator should be the homepage of every SME’s !)
