Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide Slide 1 VALA Sessions OpenCalais - a Semantic Web API – Tom Tague RFID Standards and Profiles – Alan Butters Session Other Things. NOTE: These are some my notes and thoughts after attended at the VALA 2010 conference. They are NOT intended to be a comprehensive presentation on these subjects.

Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide OpenCalais – A Semantic Web API Boot Camp Session – Tom Taque (Thomson Reuters) Also covered in the Keynote Speech What is OpenCalais? –Thomson Reuters API –Converts Unstructured contented – returns structured meta data –Creates ‘named’ entities, facts and events. –Web Service –Free to use. –Uses REST or SOAP protocols –Text/XML or HTML only. –Returns LinkedData in XML/RDF format; Slide 2

Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide OpenCalais – A Semantic Web API What is LinkedData –W3C standard for publishing data on the web. –Part of the Semantic Web –Enables the exploring of the data on the web by people or machines through linking data –More than just names –http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/LinkedData.html for more details.http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/LinkedData.html Demo: http://viewer.opencalais.comhttp://viewer.opencalais.com Example: Powerhouse MuseumPowerhouse Museum Slide 3

Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide RFID Standards and Profiles (Alan Butters Session) RFID Standards –ISO/IEC 18000-3 The standard that describes how the RFID Tags and Readers communicate with each other. Doesn’t define what data is on the tag. –ISO/IEC 28560 Describes how the data on the tag is stored. Still draft and awaiting approval. Structured in 3 parts. –Part 1 – Defines what data elements that libraries may choose to place on their RFID tags. –Part 2 – Flexible encoding of selected data; based on another ISO standard (ISO/IEC 15962) –Part 3 – Fixed encoding; based on Data Model standards like the Danish Data Model.

Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide RFID Standards and Profiles (Alan Butters Session) Why have parts 2 and 3 (They do the same thing?) Which one to Use? –Standards Australia has endorsed the flexible encoding method (Part two) –Part two - Also favoured by other countries such as the UK and the USA. –Australian libraries should ensure RFID providers are at least implementing parts one and two of ISO/IEC 28560, –This ensures country-wide interoperability. What are RFID providers doing about the new standard? –Most are support draft standard now, –Or promising to within 12 months of the standard acceptance. –plan to support both encoding parts (2 and 3)

Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide RFID Standards and Profiles (Alan Butters Session) –Libraries should seek seamless conversion to standard if the supplier if required. Many RFID providers have indicated conversion to the standard can be achieved seamlessly if data is on current tags. system could read the data from each tag, reformat it into the new model and then write it back to the tag to the new standard Profiles –New data standard does NOT ensure interoperability between libraries or consortium. –Libraries can still choose what data to put on tag –Consortia in Victoria, NSW and WA, as well as PLAIN are implementing ‘profiles’ that define a minimum fields to be included on a tag.

Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide Other Stuff Usability Testing at Deakin University, VIC –Used formal methodologies for testing usability of the OPAC Agile and Crystal Clear with Library IT innovations –Using Agile methodologies to develop new features quickly. Discovery Layers: Lots of sessions about different discovery layer options and products –Next Gen: SAAS, Cloud products, such as Summon, Wordcat Local, Primo Central etc OCLC WordCat API’s
