MYTHS AND LEGENDS

2 THE FIRST PEOPLE… There is much controversy over how Native Americans actually came to inhabit America. Native American tradition says that Indians were always in America. The most accepted theory is that there used to be a Land Bridge (some say ice bridge) connecting Alaska and Russia, called the Bering Land Bridge or the Beringia Land Crossing, that Asians traveled to enter into Central North America 12,000 years ago. The coasts these people would have been traveling down are now under water, and if they traveled by boat, the boats they would have used would be organic and made of wood, unlikely to preserve.

6 FOUR FUNCTIONS OF A MYTH
1. To awaken us to the mystery and wonder of creation 2. To explain the workings of the natural world: every corner, every rock, hill, stone, and flower has its place and its meaning. 3. To pass down the moral and ethical codes that support and validate social customs. 4. To teach: to guide the people through the trials of living

7 WHAT IS A LEGEND? *A legend is a semi-true story, which has been passed on from person-to-person and has important meaning or symbolism for the culture in which it originates. A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on historic facts, but with 'mythical qualities'. Legends usually involve heroic characters or fantastic places and often encompass the spiritual beliefs of the culture in which they originate. *grounded in history; within realm of possibility, unlike myth, which “coveys a truth” rather than being based on true events
