Arizona Group B Teachers SLO Informational Webinar Dr. Carrie L. Giovannone Deputy Associate Superintendent of Research & Evaluation

Agenda Group B Options for Pilot Year 1 Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Types of Assessments Timeline Steps of Development Examples This is adapted from the Indiana Department of Education, RISE Evaluation and Development System. 2

General Weighting for Teachers in Arizona’s Teacher Evaluation Model 33% School/Classroom-Level Data 17% Survey/Peer Review/Self-Reflection 50% Teaching Performance 3

Student Learning Objectives Definition: A student learning objective (SLO) is a classroom level standards-based measure relevant to the content area taught during the current school year that is: Specific and measureable Based on available prior student learning data Written to measure growth and/or achievement AZ Teacher Evaluation model contains Classroom SLOs and Targeted SLOs for a subset of students. 4

Classroom SLOs A measure of student mastery within a specific content area. For the AZ Teacher Evaluation model we require this objective to include all students in a class/classes for one content area. Examples: 1.90% of the students will pass Algebra I 2.18 out of 20 students will score a 3 or higher on the AP World History exam 5

Targeted SLOs A measure of student growth for a particular set of students in the lowest level of preparedness in order to master the content area. Examples: 1.4 out of 6 students will increase 10 words per minute over their baseline median score on the Oral Reading Fluency assessment. 2.2 out of 3 students will improve one achievement level on the Drama performance final exam. 6

Pre-Approved Assessment Types for SLOs 7 Evaluator Approved CONFIDENCE

Two Options for PILOT 1 - Group B In PILOT 1, every teacher (Group A and Group B) will be partially evaluated on School-wide/Grade Level Data and have the option of using SLOs: Option 1: Group B teachers (Grades: K, 1, 7-12 non-tested subject teachers, Specials Teachers, and Resource Teachers) will be evaluated on one SLO and School-wide/Grade Level Data Each Group B teacher will choose one class to set the SLO used in the evaluation Option2: Group B teachers will use only School-wide/Grade Level Data (e.g., AIMS data and/or other school-wide data) 8

Timeline for the SLO Process 9 *Students will be classified in one of three categories: low, medium, or high preparedness for the current course. Evaluation

Steps of the SLO Process 10

SLO Example: K-1 Targeted SLO: 3 of the 5 students identified at the lowest level of “preparedness” (e.g., “Well-Below” benchmark goal on DIBELs) will increase one level between fall and spring tests. Rubric: Complete Attainment (4) High Attainment (3)Moderate Attainment (2) Minimal Attainment (1) The students have surpassed the teacher’s expectations described in the targeted SLO and/or have demonstrated outstanding growth. The students have met the teacher’s expectations described in the targeted SLO and/or have demonstrated considerable growth. The students have not fully met the teacher’s expectations described in the targeted SLO. The students have not met the teacher’s expectations described in the targeted SLO. 16

SLO Example: K-1 Classroom SLO: At least 28 out of 31 students (90%) will score “At or Above” the benchmark goal on DIBELs on the spring test. Rubric: Complete Attainment (4) High Attainment (3) Moderate Attainment (2) Minimal Attainment (1) The students met the SLO 80% - 89% of the students met the SLO 60%- 79% of the students met the SLO Less than 60% of students met the SLO 17
