Agenda 1. Mini-Lesson: Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences Power Point Presentation 2. Read “Oranges” by Gary Soto 3. Complete the Making Inferences graphic organizer 4. Partner Discussions Objective By the end of the period, you will all be able to make inferences based on details from a poem.

What are conclusions and inferences? There are many times each day when you figure out something on your own without someone telling you what is happening. For instance, if you see a dog sitting by the door, you can figure out that the dog wants to go outside. Or, if you see people wearing hats, scarves, and mittens, you know the weather is cold.

How do you draw conclusions and make inferences? When you read you draw conclusions or make inferences. Author’s do not always give you all the details. There are times when you need to figure something out for yourself. For example… When I went on vacation I saw a lot of kangaroos and wallabies and everyone kept calling me “Mate.” Where did the author go on vacation? The author does not need to come out and tell you that he went to Australia. You can figure this out on your own.

Read the paragraph from an article about a form of dance and music called salsa. As you read, see if you can figure out which forms of music have influenced salsa. Salsa refers to a form of Latin dance music. Depending upon whom you consult, salsa has its origins in Cuba, Puerto Rico, or New York City. In the United States, salsa is a combination of Afro-Caribbean music and rhythms, along with elements of jazz. Salsa also has elements of rock and swing. Salsa is becoming more popular every day. According to one Latino author, Mambo, Cha-Cha-Cha, and Merengue are three popular dances in California today, while Guaguanco and Guajira are still danced in New York, Puerto Rico, and Florida. This paragraph does not directly tell you which forms of music have influenced salsa. It does, however, provide details that help you figure out this information on your own. So, which forms of music have influenced salsa? Jazz, rock and swing have influenced salsa. What detail from the text did you use to help you make this inference? In the United States salsa is a combination of Afro-Caribbean music and rhythms, along with elements of jazz. Salsa also has elements of rock and swing. And from your own experience, you already knew that these are also types of music.

Details are sometimes not stated clearly or explained in a reading passage. You must draw your own conclusions and make your own inferences. Whenever you figure something out that is not directly stated in a reading passage, you are drawing a conclusion, or making an inference. To draw a conclusion or to make an inference, pay attention to people, places, and objects that are not fully presented in a reading passage. Use details from the reading passage, as well as what you know from your own life to draw a conclusion or to make an inference.
