2. GUSTAV KLIMT was born in Vienna in 1862
GUSTAV KLIMT was born in Vienna in He had formal art training at the Vienna School of Decorative Arts. In 1882, Klimt opened a studio of his own with his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch, a fellow student. They specialized in painting murals.

3. In 1897 Gustav Klimt and a few other artists founded the Vienna Secession and he became its first president. The group's goals were to bring and exhibit the best foreign artists' works to Vienna.

4. These are called Mosaics and all the work Klimt did after 1903 was influenced by the patterns in these Early Christian art works.
In 1903 Klimt traveled to Italy and discovered wonderful wall-sized scenes made from glittering colored stones, tiles, and glass.

5. GOLDEN PHASE
Klimt's Golden Phase was marked by positive critical success. Many of his paintings from this period used gold leaf. Klimt’s trips to Venice and Ravenna most likely inspired his gold technique and repeated patterns.

6. In 1905 Gustav Klimt left the Vienna Secession after a disagreement with another member. Klimt continued his artistic journey. He went into design works for fashion and jewelry. In 1911 his painting Death and Life received first prize in the world exhibitions in Rome. Klimt died four years later in Vienna on February 6, 1918.

8. Art Nouveau developed in reaction to the rapid growth of industry and technology (Industrial Revolution) at the end of the 19th century.
Characteristics of the Art Nouveau style are curving shapes, decorative repeated patterns, and the use of natural materials.
