Antarctica Calder and Jordan and Pingu 2N

Questions What is the capital of Antarctica? Why is Antarctica considered a desert? Two examples of animals that live in Antarctica? How many species of penguins are there. Where is the Antarctic located? What species of polar bears live there?

What we will talk about We will be talking about the animals, the people and climate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5VW0XTFBZo&list=PL61 8FC17F14C0B5DA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5VW0XTFBZo&list=PL61 8FC17F14C0B5DA

Animals There are 21 species of penguins. Not all of them live in Antartica. Some of the penguins that live in Antartica are the Emporer penguins, The Rockhopper, the Chinstrap, The king and the Adelie penguin and Macroni penguin. There also are leopard seals, wedddell seals, Ross seals. There are whales and killer whales, Blue Whale and humpback whale. All of the Antartic animals have adapted to life in extremely cold conditions. They have an insulating layer of fat to protect them from the cold.

People There are hundreds of scientists that work at different research centers. The scientists also study humans in Antarctica, doing research on how the human body adapts to cold and how the human mind and heart react to extreme isolation. There are no native people in Antarctica. Emilio Marcos Palma was the first baby born in Antarctica in 1978. The first human there was Henryk Bull from Norway in 1895. And the first woman was Catherine Mikkelson in 1935. Captain James Cook and his crew was the first person to cross Antarctica.

Climate Antarcticas the coldest place on Earth. The average tempature in Antarctica is -50 C. The season in Antartica are the opposite of most seasons. Summer is October through Febuary. Winter is March through September.
