2 Fermilab Interest - 1 A small group of scientists at Fermilab have begun discussing possible options for a   e conversion experiment at FNAL: Steve Geer BNL-MECO Meeting January 2006 page 2 If there is a practical & fiscally attractive solution at FNAL for a cutting edge   e experiment, then there are FNAL people interested in the experiment. 3 Open Questions 1.Is there a way to provide an adequate beam intensity with an acceptable bunch structure for a   e experiment at FNAL without significantly impacting the neutrino program ? 2.How would the experiment evolve from the Booster era to the FPD era ? 3.Cost and Performance ? 4.Should the beam/experiment be MECO-like, PRISM/PRIME - like, or something else ? Press for early decision Nothing yet LHC discovery: GO This induces other program choices ILC Proton Driver Oddone P5 Talk (9/2005) The future Fermilab program faces a major branch point when it is known whether the ILC is on a fast track or delayed. This “decision point” is expected to occur next year. If we are on an ILC fast track, it may not be realistic to expect a major new experimental initiative at Fermilab beyond NOvA … at least not for a long time, unless there is a significant non-US contribution.

5 Relationship with Fermilab Proton Driver If we are on an ILC delayed track, we expect a push for the Fermilab Proton Driver (FPD). In the recent FPD physics study, a low energy muon program was identified as a promising candidate to complement the neutrino program at FNAL in the FPD-era. LOCAL THOUGHTS: If there is an attractive solution for a   e conversion experiment at FNAL, I can imagine it being proposed after the FPD decision point (sometime in 2007). The proposed experiment might start at the existing Booster, & then become part of the FPD program (Think of the NOvA plan). Steve Geer BNL-MECO Meeting January 2006 page 5
