10 History of Victoria Victorias cultural identity has a great connection with Aboriginal people who have occupied the land for thousands of years. Over 30 000 immigrants came to Victoria during the time of the Gold Rush from countries such as Britain, Europe, America and China. Immigrants from China made up 20 percent of the population of Victoria during the Gold rush around 1788. Explorers Hume and Hovell were the first Europeans to discover the region in 1824. Gold miners were next to arrive, seeking their fortunes. Bushrangers then followed as well as cattlemen to set up home and establish their herds to the alpine grasses. http://www.about- australia.com/facts/victoria/history/
