All About Area By Ali Warren B-1

What is Area? Area is simply the size of a surface. It is measured in square units. Think about painting a 2D shape. Area is the amount of paint needed to cover the shape.

Formulas for Area Square Area = a 2 a = length of side (Or b x h) ↕ a Rectangle Area = L x W L = length W = width (Or b x h) Trapezoid Area = ½(a+b) x h h = vertical height ↕ a ↕ b ↕ h (You are averaging the two side lengths when you divide a & b by 2.) ↕ ↕ W L Parallelogram Area = b x h b = base h = vertical height ↕ ↕ b h b ↕ ↕ h Triangle ½ x b x h b = base h = vertical height (Triangles are halfs of other polygons that have the formula for area b x h. This is why we divide the b x h by 2.)

Area in the Real World Area is important to learn because it is used in everyday life. For example, to install carpet you must multiply the room’s length by it’s width to find out how many square feet of carpeting to buy. Another example would be how many cans of paint to buy, or how many bags of fertilizer you need to cover your garden. How are area problems used in the real world?

Guided Practice Mary wants to install new carpet in her bedroom. She measures the length and the width of her bedroom. Mary’s room is 13 feet by 11 feet. How many square feet of carpeting is needed to cover Mary’s room? The formula is A = L x W, or area equals length times width. So, you must multiply 13 feet by 11 feet. 13 x 11 = Do the work on your paper! 143ft 2 Remember your units!

Practice Problem Sammy is planning a garden. She measures the length and the width where her garden will be. Sammy’s garden will be 45 feet by 16 feet. A bag of fertilizer says it can cover 50 square feet. What is the area of Sammy’s garden and how many bags of fertilizer will she need to buy? Show all of your work while finding the answer! Don’t forget to put in your units! Answers: Bags of fertilizer = 15 (round up) Area = 720ft 2

Practice Problem Chloe is painting a billboard for a company. In the company’s logo there is a triangle. Chloe painted the triangle on the billboard. The triangle had a base of 20 feet and a height of 60 feet. What is the area of the triangle Chloe painted? Answer: 600ft 2

Practice Problem John made toy cars for little kids. On each of the cars he painted a trapezoid where he signed his name. If these are the measurements, what is the area of the trapezoid John would paint on the cars? John 4cm 6cm 5cm Answer: 27cm 2

Practice Problem Josh just mowed a large soccer field. The soccer field was 100 yards long and 60 yards wide. What is the area of the soccer field? Answer: 600yd 2

Practice Problem Olivia is painting her ceiling pink. Olivia’s ceiling is in the shape of a square. One side of her ceiling is 12 feet long. What is the area of Olivia’s ceiling? Answer: 144ft 2
