3  Education is directly linked to social and economic development. When children receive an education, they usually become healthier adults with a greater earning potential. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), every year of schooling increases potential earnings for females and males by an average of ten percent. Despite this, there are 862 million adults in the world who cannot read and write, and in Sub- Saharan Africa less than 3 out of 4 students reach the end of primary school (known as elementary school in the US).  In this lesson, students will analyze statistics comparing levels of education with development around the world and in Sub- Saharan Africa.

4  Development is a term used to describe a nation’s economic activities and social infrastructure.

5  Gross Domestic Product is the sum of all goods and services produced inside the country.

6  The total GDP is divided by the number of people living in the country.
