T WISTED P AIR

U NSHIELDED T WISTED P AIR (UTP) The UTP has several categories. These categories define the quality level of the cable. The categories are: Category 1 : This is a common telephone cable. Category 2: CAT2 cable was first networking UTP but is now considered obsolete. It supports data rate up to 1Mbps. Category 3: CAT3 is seldom used outside an IBM environment and has been replaced by CAT5. CAT3 is used in 10Mbps Ethernet LANs and 4Mbps Token Ring LANs.

U NSHIELDED T WISTED P AIR (UTP) Category 4 : CAT4 has been specified for up to 20Mbps and is specific for 16Mbps Token Ring LANs. Category 5: CAT5 has been specified for data rates up to 100Mbps. This is the preferred cabling installation for Ethernet and Token Ring. Category 6 : CAT6 has been specified for data rates up to 1000Mbps (1 Gbps). Category 7 : CAT7 has been specified for data rates up to 10 Gbps.

U NSHIELDED T WISTED P AIR (UTP) EIA/TIA-568A/B compliant refers to which of the four pairs in the UTP cable are designated as transmit, and which are designated as receive. Use the following as a guide: EIA/TIA-568A: Devices transmit over pair 3, and receive over pair 2. EIA/TIA-568B: Devices transmit over pair 2, and receive over pair 3.

U NSHIELDED T WISTED P AIR (UTP) UTP is susceptible to crosstalk. Shielding is used to reduce crosstalk.

S HIELDED T WISTED P AIR (STP) STP contains a metal shielding fully encircling the twisted pairs to reduce the ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI). EMI is produced by sources such as motors, generators, or power lines.

S HIELDED T WISTED P AIR (STP) The shielding may be either: A metal foil (called Foil Twisted Pair, or FTP ). A fine mesh of braided metal (called Screened Twisted Pair, or ScTP ). STP using the foil shield is thinner, easier to install, and cheaper. Advantages of STP over UTP: STP is less susceptible to electrical interference. STP supports higher transmission rate over longer distance than UTP.

R EGISTERED J ACK – 45 (RJ-45) Twisted-pair uses RJ-45 connector to connect a computer. The RJ-45 is slightly larger than the RJ-11 telephone connector. In addition, RJ-45 houses eight cable connections, while the RJ-11 only houses four.
